100 paintings essential romanians
From national romanticism to outdoor painting, from Luchian bouquets to Petraimbabwe materials and avant-gardes: a century of Romanian painting constructed by light, color and history.

A European history written from Romania
Modern Romanian painting is not born from a single manifesto. It is formed through contact with Vienna, Rome, Paris and Barbizon, then transforms this learning according to its own emergencies. In the mid-19th century, Theodor Aman contributed to establish artistic education sustainably in Bucharest. Rosenthal and Tattarescu simultaneously give visible form to political ideals, the national narrative and the new portrait society.
With Nicolae Grigorescu and Ion Andreescu, nature is no longer a background. The path, the edge, the field, the tree and the cart become autonomous patterns, tested in the air and reconstructed by the touch. ergtefan Luchian take this conquest further: its flowers are not ornaments, but concentrations of color capable of expressing the fragility of life.
The artists of the interwar period then refused a unique modernity. Petraimbabwe thickens the material, Tonitza simplifies the forms to better achieve emotion, Dimitrescu monumentalizes ordinary lives, Pallady disciplines intimacy and Segal transforms light into a network. This plurality is precisely the strength of Romanian painting.
Three lines of force
Paint history
From 1848 to the War of Independence, public image accompanied the formation of modern Romania. Allegory and battle are never separated from portrait and individual experience.
Inhabit the landscape
Forests, plains, villages, banks of the Siret and coasts of the Black Sea make up a diverse pictorial geography. The territory is revealed by light as much as by topography.
Traveling in Europe
Rome, Barbizon, Paris, Toledo, Venice and Balcic cross this route. These movements do not erase singularities: they provide painters with the means to construct them.

See reproduction →Understanding Romanian painting
Why does Theodor Aman occupy a founding place?
Painter, engraver, organizer and teacher, Aman participated in the creation of the National School of Fine Arts in Bucharest. His battles, portraits and interior scenes give a new public and professional ambition to Romanian painting.
What role does Barbizon play in Grigorescu and Andreescu?
Barbizon offers them less of a formula than a method: working in front of nature, observing variations of light and granting pictorial dignity to ordinary motifs. However, everyone draws from it a distinct writing, clearer in Grigorescu, denser and meditative in Andreescu.
Why are Luchian flowers essential?
Luchian simplifies the background, brings the bouquet together and varies the impasto so that the color becomes the real subject. The anemone, the cornflower or the poppy have a physical and emotional presence which goes beyond decorative still life.
What sets Petraimbabwe apart from Tonitza?
Petraimbabwe built by accumulation: dark layers, metallic reflections and tight material give objects and architecture exceptional weight. Tonitza favors a simpler line, matte harmonies and faces where economy of means intensifies emotion.
How was the ranking established?
The selection follows the historical importance, pictorial quality, representativeness of periods and the capacity of each work to shed light on an evolution. It contains only oil paintings: drawings, engravings, watercolors, photographs and sculptures have been excluded.
