Self-portrait with fur

Date1500TechniqueOil on lime panelSourceAlpha Reproduction

Painted at twenty-eight, this self-portrait adopts a frontality then especially associated with the images of Christ. Dürer does not deify himself: he affirms that the creative power of the artist deserves a new intellectual dignity. The direct gaze, the symmetry of the face, the hand placed on the fur and the Latin inscription transform his appearance into an author's declaration. Careful execution hair and clothing, however, maintains the image in individual observation.

Self-portrait with gloves

Date1498TechniqueOil on panelSourceAlpha Reproduction

Dürer represents himself here as a gentleman, dressed in a refined doublet and gray kid gloves. These gloves, which precisely hide the painter's hands, signal a high social rank: the artist claims the status of an educated man rather than that of a simple craftsman. The window opening onto an Alpine landscape recalls his Italian experience, while the bifocal formed by the face and the hands adjust the entire composition.

Thistle self-portrait

Date1493TechniqueParchment mounted on canvasSourceAlpha Reproduction

Dürer's first known painted self-portrait, this panel shows the artist at twenty-two holding a panicaut, often called a thistle. The Louvre recalls that the plant could be a symbol of marital fidelity and that the work may have served as an engagement portrait before his marriage to Agnes Frey. The German inscription, which entrusts its destiny to what is decided "up there", gives to the worried face with a scope that is both intimate and spiritual.

The Virgin of the Feast of the Rosary

Date1506TechniqueOil on panelSourceAlpha Reproduction

Commissioned in Venice by the brotherhood of German merchants for the San Bartolomeo church, this large composition was to prove that Dürer could compete with Italian painters. The Virgin and Child distribute rose crowns to the pope, the emperor and an assembly that brings together religious power, political power and a community of the faithful. Under the tree, Dürer represented himself holding a cartel that claims to have completed the painting in five months.

Adam

Date1507TechniqueOil on panelSourceAlpha Reproduction

With its counterpart dedicated to Eve, Adam constitutes one of the first life-size nudes in Northern European painting. Dürer executed it after his second stay in Italy and sought to reconcile the ideal of ancient proportion with Germanic descriptive precision. The half-open mouth and the gaze directed towards Eve give the monumental body a psychological tension: the biblical story also becomes a study of desire, movement and human beauty.

Eve

Date1507TechniqueOil on panelSourceAlpha Reproduction

Eve forms a pair with Adam designed to be looked at together. The snake hands him the forbidden fruit from the branch, while its supple gesture and unstable balance announce an elegance that the Prado brings closer to mannerism. Dürer contrasts his light complexion with Adam's browner one and inscribes his signature on the cartel hanging from the tree. The religious subject thus serves a search ambitious on proportions and the female nude.

The worship of the wise men

Datearound 1492TechniquePainting on panelSourceAlpha Reproduction

This first Adoration, today in Basel, should not be confused with the famous panel painted in 1504 and kept at the Uffizi. Dürer organizes a horizontal procession here: the kneeling king meets the Child on the left, while the two other Magi advance from the landscape. Contemporary clothing, the succession of profiles and the shallow depth still give the scene the narrative rhythm of a Nordic altar shutter. The painting thus shows the young painter before the more monumental synthesis of his Italian years.

Adoration of the Holy Trinity

Date1511TechniqueOil on panelSourceAlpha Reproduction

Also known as the Landauer Altarpiece, the painting was intended for the chapel of a charity house founded in Nuremberg by Matthäus Landauer. God the Father supports Christ crucified under the dove of the Holy Spirit, while saints, martyrs, clerics and laity form an immense celestial community. At the very bottom, Dürer places himself alone in an earthly landscape, holding the cartel of his signature: one clear separation between the living author and the vision of eternity.

The Martyrdom of Ten Thousand Christians

Date1508TechniquePainting on wood, transferred to canvasSourceAlpha Reproduction

The painting brings together in a compact space the tortures inflicted, according to legend, on Prince Achatius and his soldiers converted to Christianity. At the center of this violence, Dürer appears as a calm observer, accompanied by the humanist Conrad Celtis, who died shortly before the completion of the work. Their anachronistic presence does not tell of martyrdom: it invites the learned spectator to meditate on fidelity, suffering and historical memory.

The four apostles: Saints John and Peter

Date1526TechniquePainting on lime tree panelSourceAlpha Reproduction

John occupies the foreground, absorbed in reading his Gospel, while Peter stands behind him with his large key. Along with the panel of Mark and Paul, the work was offered by Dürer to the Nuremberg council. The texts of Luther's Bible inscribed at the bottom of the panels urge authorities to listen to Scripture and be wary of false prophets. John's concentrated calm embodies here a faith based on reading.

The four apostles: Saints Mark and Paul

Date1526TechniquePainting on lime tree panelSourceAlpha Reproduction

On the second panel of the Four Apostles, Mark turns around with almost worried intensity while Paul, monumental, holds the book and the sword which allow him to be identified. Dürer associates the four figures with human temperaments and gives them a presence close to sculpture. The biblical quotes placed under the image send a warning to the leaders of Nuremberg in the context of the Reformation: political authority must remain subject to the divine word.

Albrecht Dürer, Lukas Paumgartner en saint Eustache, vers 1500#98
Religious works and altarpieces · Museum notice

Lukas Paumgartner as Saint Eustace

On one of the shutters of the Paumgartner altarpiece, Lukas Paumgartner adopts the armor and attributes of Saint Eustace. Dürer is therefore not looking for a daily portrait: he transforms the donor into a life-size role figure, according to a usage still accepted around 1500. The isolation of the knight on a dark background reinforces his presence and makes the armor a real social language. The museum specifies that the shutters were painted as early as 1498, before or during the completion of the central panel.

Stephan Paumgartner as Saint George

Stephan Paumgartner is represented in the guise of Saint George, as a counterpart to his brother Lukas depicted as Saint Eustace. The section thus combines a donor portrait, chivalrous ideal and family devotion without confusing the model with a historical saint. The narrow silhouette, shiny armor and almost abstract background give the character the monumentality of a painted statue. THE reverse bears an Annunciation, recalling that this panel had two sides and changed meaning with the opening of the altarpiece.

Virgin and Breastfeeding Child

Dürer here reduces the Virgin to a nursing mother, without halo or spectacular attribute: the museum precisely emphasizes the unusual simplicity and intimacy of this image. The small format suggests a private devotional work, probably intended for the market rather than an identified sponsor. The Child's gesture and Mary's inclined face bring the painting closer to several studies and Marian engravings executed around 1503. This sobriety marks a return to Nordic traditions after the monumental effects borrowed from Venetian painting.
