One hundred works · between ports and colors
The 100known paintings that tell the storyPaul Signac
From the banks of the Seine to the ports of Saint-Tropez and Venice, Signac brings color to life touch after touch - the Mediterranean has probably never been so tidy.
Opus on the enamel of a rhythmic background of measures and angles, tones and hues, portrait of Mr. Félix Fénéon in 1890information not specified · Museum of Modern Art (MoMA)
Signac transformed color theory into a sensitive adventure, without ever giving up the ports, sails and cities he traveled through. This classification follows its stopovers, from the Seine to Saint-Tropez, from Venice to Constantinople, where each touch becomes a small unit of light.

Opus on the enamel of a rhythmic background of measures and angles, tones and hues, portrait of Mr. Félix Fénéon in 1890
Painted in 1890, this portrait transforms the critic Félix Fénéon into a ceremonial silhouette in front of an almost cosmic chromatic wheel. The title, deliberately interminable, parodies the scientific language of color while saluting that who defended the neo-impressionists. Signac thus offers his friend an iconic profile and posterity a rare painting whose work the cartel seems to want to beat in a race.

In the time of harmony: the golden age is not in the past, it is in the future
Signac conceived this vast composition between 1893 and 1895 as the image of a pacified society, attuned to its libertarian convictions. Work, reading, play and rest coexist on the shores of the Mediterranean without a leader or central hero. Preserved at Montreuil town hall, the painting replaces nostalgia for the golden age with a future to build.

Women at the well
Presented in 1892, this scene transposes to Saint-Tropez the solemn rhythm of the great classical compositions. The two women, the sea and the hills are united by the same colorful framework, as if the landscape shared their gesture. The work marks the moment when Signac gives divisionism the breadth of a monumental painting.

The Red Buoy
Built in Saint-Tropez in 1895, this view organizes the port around a tiny red signal which nevertheless holds the entire composition. Signac lets the keys widen and the complementary colors make the water vibrate. The buoy didn't nothing of a character, but she knows how to get noticed perfectly.

The dining room
Painted in 1886-1887, this domestic scene belongs to Signac's first divisionist experiments. The cold light, the still profiles and the carefully spaced objects give the meal a strange gravity. Here, no one talk a lot; the colors have already started the conversation.

A Sunday
Signac worked from 1888 to 1890 on this image of a bourgeois couple locked in their Sunday comfort. The square format, the interrupted gestures and the distance between the figures tip the interior towards silent social criticism. Sunday is very non-working, even in conversation.

The Moulin de la Galette, in Montmartre
Dated 1884, this view of Montmartre precedes Signac's complete adherence to divisionism. The still free touch records the street, passers-by and the mill as the mobile elements of a working-class neighborhood. We see the young man there painter look for his method before the points take command.
