How did Rembrandt make etching?

Copper plate, varnish, needle, acid bite, inking and press: here is the complete chain - and the moment when the drypoint changes the sharpness of the line to velvety black.

Rembrandt covered a copper plate with an acid-resistant varnish. With a needle, he removed this varnish where he wanted a line. The acid then bit the uncovered metal. After cleaning, he pushed the ink into the hollows, wiped the surface, placed a damp sheet on the plate and passed the whole thing under a intaglio press.

La drypoint is a separate process: the tool directly scratches the copper and lifts a small metal beard. This beard retains more ink, creating a dark, velvety line, but it crushes and wears out as you print. Rembrandt often combined etching, drypoint and chisel on the same plate.

What we know - and what we piece together. The plates and proofs preserved make it possible to identify the processes. On the other hand, not every detail of a specific session has been recorded. The procedure below combines the material traces left by Rembrandt with the documented practices of intaglio in the 17th centurye century.

From plaque to proof

The eight essential gestures

An etching is not a simply "printed" drawing. Each step transforms the line: the varnish allows the drawing, the acid gives it depth, the wiping adjusts the light and the press brings the paper into the sizes.

1Prepare the copper

The plate is polished, cleaned and degreased. A regular surface prevents acid from attacking unwanted areas.

2Apply the varnish

A protective mixture of resin and wax covers the metal. It must be homogeneous enough to resist bathing.

3Draw with a needle

The needle passes through the varnish without necessarily digging into the copper. The lines expose the metal. The final test will be reversed.

4To bite

The plaque is exposed to acid. This attacks only the lines discovered and creates furrows capable of receiving the ink.

5Stop and remorse

A stop varnish protects lines that are already deep enough. Others may stay in the acid longer and become stronger.

6Clean and resume

The varnish is removed. Rembrandt may add drypoint, deepen with a chisel, brown or scrape certain areas.

7Ink and wipe

The ink is pushed into the hollows. The surface is wiped, sometimes retaining a veil called plate tone.

8Go to press

The moistened paper and plate pass between the rolls. The high pressure forces the fibers into the sizes and transfers the ink.

Ink, wipe, press: a second creation

The engraved plate does not determine the image alone. The printer may wipe until it has a light background or leave a film of ink that darkens the atmosphere. He can clean certain lights with palm, muslin or paper, then choose European paper, Japanese paper or even vellum.

Rembrandt exploits these variables like a painter. Two impressions taken from the same state are therefore not necessarily identical. The sky may appear heavier, a figure more isolated, or a ray more vibrant simply because the tone of the plate and the support have changed.

The printed image appears mirrored from the drawing placed on the plate. The artist must therefore anticipate the inversion - or accept it as part of the process.

The juxtaposition allows us to concretely understand the transition from metal to paper: the drawing is reversed, the hollows become black and the tiny relief produces a larger image than the engraved object suggests.

Three tools, three characters

Etching, drypoint and chisel do not produce the same line

The tip moves the metal instead of removing it cleanly. The beard retains excess ink which leaves a dark, velvety edge.

The Hundred Florin Piece: draw with several depths of black

In this large print dedicated to Christ healing the sick, Rembrandt combines etching, drypoint and chisel. The lightest contours remain ventilated, while the dark areas accumulate sizes, hatching and rework. There light does not come from a wash added afterwards: it arises from the contrast between the density of the hollows and the paper reserves.

The variety of figures shows the advantage of etching. The needle can circulate with the spontaneity of a drawing, change apparent pressure thanks to successive bites, then receive direct reinforcements. Drypoint densifies certain shadows and binds groups without standardizing the entire surface.

To look closely: compare the very fine lines around the faces, the cross hatching in the crowd and the heavier blacks under the clothes. The same plate contains several drawing speeds.

Line, weather, depth

The Three Trees: When the Bite Builds the Storm

The landscape is organized by densities of very different sizes. The furrows of the sky are fast and oblique; the foliage superimposes tight networks; the distances remain clearer. A uniform bite would have flattened these plans. On the contrary, stops and retakes allow black people to be staggered.

Rembrandt doesn't just seek to reproduce contours. It gives each family of traits a function: rain passes through, vegetation thickens, paths open, the horizon breathes. Technique becomes a grammar of movement.

The same copper, another vision

The Three Crosses: from the third to the fourth state

One state corresponds to an identifiable version of the plate after modification. In The Three Crosses, Rembrandt doesn't just darken a few details. He scrapes, picks up and covers the scene with large diagonals, modifying the place of the figures and the luminous balance. The comparison proves that a copper plate remains a construction site.

In the early states, a crowd occupies the foreground. Later, Rembrandt removes a large part of the characters and replaces this area with two arches. Metal can be scraped and burnished to reduce old sizes, then re-engraved. A supposedly permanent surface thus becomes the support for a radical decision.

Plate, condition, proof and print

The plate

The copper matrix carrying the hollows. It can be bitten, scratched, browned, scraped and reworked.

The state

A phase of the plate after modification. Several proofs can be taken from the same state.

The test

An individually printed sheet. Its wiping, paper and inking give it its own character.

The draw

All prints produced. In drypoint, the former can be more velvety than the following ones.

Why are drypoint first impressions sought after? The metal beard is fragile. Wiping and pressure gradually flatten it; it then retains less ink. The blacks of the first tests can therefore appear richer, without the plate having been deliberately modified.

Six clues to observe in front of a Rembrandt

  • A thin, movable line often evokes etching and its needle freedom.
  • A velvety black with a slightly diffuse edge may signal drypoint beard.
  • A very clear and deep line can correspond to a recovery with a chisel.
  • A slightly gray background may come from the plate tone retained when wiping.
  • Differences in composition signal distinct states, not just different inking.
  • The hue, texture and absorption of the paper change the presence of the line.

Rembrandt etchings FAQ

Did Rembrandt print his own etchings?

He mastered the entire process and experimented intensely with inking, wiping and supports. Assistants or printers were able to intervene depending on the moment, but variations in proofs are an integral part of his artistic research.

What is the difference between etching and engraving?

"Engraving" is a general term. In etching, the acid digs open lines into a varnish. With a chisel or drypoint, the tool acts directly on the metal.

What metal did Rembrandt use?

Mainly copper, soft enough to work with and strong enough to withstand multiple prints and modifications.

What acid was used for the bite?

Historical recipes vary and the exact composition used during each Rembrandt session is not always documented. The bottom line is that the solution attacks the discovered copper while leaving the varnish intact.

Why is the image reversed?

The sheet receives the ink directly from the plate. The left side of the matrix therefore becomes the right side of the test, as in a contact transfer.

Why does drypoint make a velvety black?

The tip raises a copper beard along the stripe. This irregular edge retains excess ink around the furrow, which softens and thickens the printed line.

What's a print state?

This is an identifiable version of the plaque after a modification. Whenever the artist adds, removes or transforms lines in a lasting manner, a new state can be distinguished.

Why do two tests of the same condition differ?

Inking, wiping, plate tone, pressure and support may vary. These differences do not change the engraving of the plate, but they significantly change the atmosphere of the print.
