Where and when was Leonardo da Vinci born?
His childhood in Vinci, between the family of notary Ser Piero, his mother Caterina, the fortified village and the landscapes of olive trees, streams and mills of Montalbano.
Vinci is certain, the house specifies is less so
Leonardo's paternal grandfather, Antonio da Vinci, inscribes the birth and baptism of the child on a page of an old family notarial register. This note gives a date, a night time and the names of the baptism witnesses. It constitutes the closest source of the event.
The name "da Vinci" does not yet designate a surname in the modern sense: it means "de Vinci". The traditional place of birth is the house of Anchiano, in the countryside located a few kilometers from the town. This tradition is ancient and the building belongs to a complex linked to the da Vinci, but historians have discussed the possibility of a birth in the family home near the castle.
To be born, to be baptized, to grow
The places visited today do not all have the same degree of historical certainty, but they restore the concrete geography of childhood.

Anchiano
The traditional birthplace, among the olive trees of Montalbano, is today integrated into the route of the Museo Leonardiano.

Santa Croce
The baptism takes place in the village church, which preserves an ancient fact traditionally associated with Leonardo.

The town
The 1458 land register places the child with his paternal family in a house with a garden near the castle.

The landscape becomes a proof of gaze
The Arno Valley Landscape was made when Leonardo was twenty-one and already working in Florence. It is therefore not a child's drawing. However, its rocks, its valleys, its water and its distances recall the shapes observed in Tuscany in its early years.
The Museo Leonardiano brings this sheet closer to the landscapes of Valdinievole, Monsummano and the Fucecchio marsh. We must avoid a too simple conclusion - the drawing is not an exact photograph of the family window - but it shows how observation of the territory remains central in its formation.
Foreground: rocks, trees and rapid movements of the feather.
Distance: valley gradually lightens.
Movement: water and paths lead the gaze.
Three homes around an illegitimate child
Leonardo's parents do not marry each other. However, his childhood did not correspond to abandonment without family: the documents linked him to Vinci's paternal home.
Ser Piero da Vinci
Florentine notary from a family based in Vinci. He successively married four women and led a career between the countryside and Florence.
Caterina
Her exact identity has given rise to several hypotheses. Local sources present her as a local woman; she then married Antonio di Piero Buti, known as Accattabriga, and lived in San Pantaleo.
Antonio and Francesco
Grandfather Antonio records the birth. Uncle Francesco, closer to Leonardo's age than his father, appears in Vinci's documents and probably counted in his childhood.
What the territory could learn

Water in motion
More than twenty mills are said to have operated in Vinci territory in the 15th century. They make currents, falls, wheels and force transmission visible.
Geology
The reliefs of Montalbano and the deposits of the valley provide lasting attention to strata, fossils and erosion.
Plants
Vines, olive trees, grasses and flowers later become observed structures, and not simple conventional ornaments.
The distant
Mist and light modify the sharpness of shapes: a daily experience that will join its atmospheric perspective.
Da Vinci at the Florentine workshop
Birth
Birth on April 15, then baptism in Santa Croce in front of ten godparents.
Cadastre
Leonardo appears in his father's home in Vinci, near the castle of Counts Guidi.
Initial training
His instruction probably remains practical and vernacular, without a complete humanist curriculum in Latin.
Florence
He joins his father and attends Andrea del Verrocchio's workshop.
Master and designer
Registration with the brotherhood of Saint-Luc, then first dated landscape.
What Florence adds to Vinci
The rural landscape forms the gaze; the bottega brings materials, controls, geometry and collective work.

The Baptism of Christ
The participation of young Leonard is part of a collective work directed by Verrocchio.

The Annunciation
Architecture, flower garden and distant landscape condense Florentine learning.

The Madonna with the Carnation
The landscape seen through the window and the delicate gestures connect human presence and depth.
What childhood cannot say
"He was born with certainty in the house museum"
Anchiano is the traditional place; the exact building remains discussed.
"His father abandoned him"
The land register places him in his father's home, surrounded by da Vinci.
"His mother was necessarily a peasant"
Sources call it Caterina, but its precise identity and origin are debated.
"His inventions come directly from the mills"
The landscape was able to nourish his observation; no childhood document proves such a simple causal chain.
From the first landscape to masterpieces

Ginevra de' Benci
A Florentine portrait where nature frames human presence.

Madonna Benois
An intimate scene animated by gestures.

The Adoration of the Magi
The drawing constructs a moving crowd.

The Mona Lisa
The landscape becomes an extension of the portrait.
