Copies, reconstructions and details of The Night Watch

A small copy from the 17th centurye century, four missing strips and scientific images today allow us to look at the painting differently - down to the shadow of a hand, the dog and the lightning of a musket.

Three images, three different statuses

The original is Rembrandt's canvas, painted in 1642 and today at the Rijksmuseum. The copy attributed to Gerrit Lundens, made shortly after, keeps the whole before its reduction. The 2021 reenactment translates the information from this copy to scale and in the table palette, with the help of neural networks.

It is neither a restoration nor a so-called original part found: the strips are attached panels, placed around the work to make its old framing visible.

The decisive document

Gerrit Lundens' copy: small, but irreplaceable

Copy of The Night Watch attributed to Gerrit Lundens
Copy attributed to Gerrit Lundens, circa 1642 -1655. It retains the characters and margins removed in 1715.

The current table. The comparison mainly reveals the loss of space on the left, in front of the captain.

The copy was probably commissioned by Captain Frans Banninck Cocq himself. It does not match Rembrandt's material, impasto and light transitions, but it transmits information that the original no longer possesses: the complete composition. Historians therefore use it as a witness, not as an aesthetic substitute.

A detailed table

Which disappeared in 1715

During the transfer to Amsterdam City Hall, the canvas did not fit between two doors. Four strips were cut; the most important was on the left.

64.4 cmremoved to the left
7 cmremoved to the right
23.3 cmremoved at the top
11.3 cmremoved at the bottom
State Height Width What that changes
Reconstructed composition 393.1 cm 507.4 cm More air, two full figures on the left and a wider movement.
Table preserved 379.5 cm approximately 436 cm The captain appears closer to the edge; the momentum becomes more frontal.

The missing parts are transposed to the scale, sharpness and palette of the large painting.

Present

Results are printed on separate panels, mounted around the original - never painted on it.

The method does not claim to find every lost brushstroke. It makes the general structure plausible and makes it possible to measure what the cropping has modified.

Before after

The left found changes the entire course

As it stands, Captain Frans Banninck Cocq almost seems to be hitting the edge. The restored strip adds two men, a child and a piece of architecture. She opens a direction in front of him and makes the departure of the company more natural.

This supplement also decenters the main group. Rembrandt had not designed a closed pyramid around the two officers, but a crowd that overflows, advances and disperses. The reframing of 1715 therefore accidentally reinforced the central icon effect.

Six details that organize the big show

Captain Banninck Cocq and Lieutenant Van Ruytenburch

1. Black and yellow

The dark captain and the luminous lieutenant form the visual engine. Their steps, arms and weapons launch several diagonals.

2. Shadow of the hand

Between the captain's thumb and projected fingers is the Amsterdam crest: the city is literally "in the hands" of the militia.

3. The young mascot girl

His light clothing, the chicken hanging on his belt and the powder horn condense the signs of the company of arquebusiers.

4. Load, pull, clean

Three figures describe the stages of handling the musket: loading on the left, shooting in the center and cleaning on the right.

5. A painted flash

The small cloud of smoke behind the lieutenant's hat is a tiny event on the scale of the canvas, but it transforms the collective portrait into sound action. The scene is not nocturnal: it is immersed in a dramatic light.

From a distance, the luminous accents order the crowd; up close, the details reveal the painter's profession.
The sixth detail

The dog: borrowed drawing, transformed painting

Researchers compared the barking dog to a drawing by Adriaen van de Venne dated 1619: the rotation of the head and the collar correspond closely. Rembrandt does not copy mechanically, however; he adapts the pattern to the dust, noise and movement of his scene.

Scientific imaging also reveals a clear outline rich in chalk in certain areas. Around the dog, ancient wear has made this preparation more visible than it was originally, which explains its now spotted appearance.

Beneath the surface

Invisible details: repentances, pigments and sketch

X-ray, X-ray fluorescence, reflectography and very high definition photography reveal work decisions: displaced lances, corrected contours, clear preparation and reservations. These images do not reveal a "code secret"; they show a painter who builds directly on the canvas.

Term Definition Example Limit
Original Object painted by Rembrandt and his studio in 1642. The painting of the Rijksmuseum. She lost four bands in 1715.
Old copy New painting based on the work. The version attributed to Gerrit Lundens. Format, key and color differ.
Reconstruction Visual hypothesis based on several sources. The panels of 2021. It does not replace lost fragments.
Detail Documentary cropping of an area of the original. Shadow, girl, musketeers. You always have to go back to the entire composition.
Really see

How to observe The Night Watch

Start far away to feel the general rhythm. Then move towards the captain and lieutenant, then follow the weapons towards the edges. Finally look for the tiny incidents: thrown hand, powder, chicken, dog, looks and metallic reflections.

On screen, use the official gigapixel image from the Rijksmuseum. At the museum, return several times in front of the canvas: the light, the crowds and the distance modify the reading.

FAQs on copies and details

Why was La Ronde de nuit cut?

In 1715, it was to enter between two gates of Amsterdam City Hall. Strips were removed on all four sides.

Have the cut pieces been found?

No. None of the four fragments are located today.

Who painted the most important copy?

It is attributed to Gerrit Lundens and dates from approximately 1642 to 1655.

Is the 2021 reenactment painted on the original?

No. The recreated parts are presented on separate panels around the canvas.

Did artificial intelligence invent tapes?

She translated the information from Lundens' copy into the scale and palette of the painting, under scientific and historical control.

What is the most famous detail?

The shadow of the captain's hand on the lieutenant's yellow coat is one of the most commented on.

Why do we see a young girl?

It functions as a symbolic mascot and carries several attributes linked to arquebusiers.

Does the painting represent night?

No. This is a daytime scene made dark by old varnishes and very theatrical lighting.

What do musketeers do?
