The Annunciation: analysis, symbols and perspective

An angel who becomes almost tangible, a Virgin stopped in her reading and a garden which suddenly opens onto infinity.

This early work is not limited to his "errors" of perspective. Leonardo organizes a passage: from the words of Gabriel to the book of Mary, from the flowery foreground to the port blued by distance, from Florentine geometry to a new science of the atmosphere.

DIRECT RESPONSE

What does Leonardo's Annunciation represent?

The Annunciation represents the episode recounted at the beginning of the Gospel according to Luke: the archangel Gabriel announces to Mary that she will give birth to Jesus. Leonardo places the meeting not in a closed room, but on the edge of a home and a garden. Gabriel kneels on the grass, raises his right hand and extends a lily. Mary, sitting in front of a desk, interrupts her reading and responds with a calm gesture.

The painting thus depicts a word invisible by visible signs: the hand of the angel, the hand of Mary, the open book, the lily and the space which separates the two figures. The vast landscape is not a simple decorative background. It transforms the private scene into a cosmic event: the gaze crosses the garden, the cypresses, the water, the ships and the mountains to an almost vaporous horizon.

The work is generally considered one of Leonardo's first large paintings, still linked to the studio of Andrea del Verrocchio. We already recognize his interest in the moving body, botany, birds, optics and the way in which the air modifies distant colors.

Best reading key: follow the painting from left to right. The speech arrives with Gabriel, crosses the lily and the desk, meets Marie's response, then continues in a landscape open to the world.
READ THE ENTIRE PANEL

A composition stretched like a sentence

The horizontal format slows down the meeting. Instead of squeezing the angel and the Virgin into a face-to-face encounter, Leonardo creates an active zone between them: the garden, the lily, the book and the desk become the joints of the scene.

01

Gabriel arrives

Its kneeling body and developed wings give weight and direction to the apparition.

02

The garden transmits

The lily, the flowers and the stone border transform the void between the figures into a meaningful space.

03

The book responds

The open page and Mary's hand connect reading, hearing and acceptance.

04

The world opens up

Harbor, water and mountains move the scene of intimacy to a universal scale.

GABRIEL BECOMES PHYSICAL

A supernatural angel, but subject to light

Gabriel does not float. His knee presses the ground, his draperies bend and his body casts a shadow. The Uffizi notice insists on this solid presence: the celestial being enters the same material world as Mary. The miraculous event therefore does not abolish observation; it makes it more demanding.

The raised right arm translates the word and can also evoke blessing. The other hand carries the lily. The wings do not resemble an abstract ornament: their structure recalls the study of a large bird. Leonardo observes how feathers, articulation and lift can make an impossible anatomy credible.

The hair, embroidery and folds retain something of the refinement of Verrocchio's workshop. But the measured twisting of the bust and the shadow under the character already make the angel an experiment on movement in space.

MARIE BETWEEN READING AND RESPONSE

Surprise without agitation

Mary does not turn away suddenly. His left hand rises towards the chest, while the right remains near the book. This double gesture keeps together inner reception and intellectual activity. The Virgin is not only surprised: she understands, weighs and accepts speech.

The book is not identified by a legible inscription. It refers more broadly to the Scriptures and to the tradition which represents Mary reading at the time of the announcement. In a Christian reading, the page and the Incarnation respond to each other: the Word announced becomes flesh.

The desk is disproportionate for a simple domestic piece of furniture. Its sculpted base takes up an invention linked to Verrocchio and recalls the funerary monument of Piero de' Medici in San Lorenzo. This detail places the painting in the visual culture of the workshop as much as in the biblical story.

Attention to interpretation: the right arm seems too long, but we cannot say that it is just clumsiness. The Offices mention a possible optical correction designed for lateral and low vision.
SIX SIGNS TO READ

Symbols, without transforming every detail into code

The iconography of the Annunciation has enduring conventions. They help to read the painting, but do not justify giving a fixed meaning to each flower, each tree or each stone.

01

The white lily

Presented by Gabriel, it is the attribute most immediately associated with Mary's purity. Its stem visually connects the angel's hand to the center of the dialogue.

SOLID TRADITIONAL INTERPRETATION
02

The enclosed garden

The wall demarcates one hortus conclusus, medieval and resurgent image of Marian virginity. However, the garden remains open to view: its fence protects without enclosing the composition.

DOCUMENTED MARIAN SYMBOLISM
03

The open book

It evokes the Scriptures, meditation and the intelligence of Mary. It also forms a material threshold: Gabriel's words interrupt, then complete the reading.

THE EXACT TEXT IS NOT IDENTIFIABLE
04

Red and blue

The red of the dress can evoke flesh, life and the Incarnation; the blue of the mantle, celestial dignity. These are conventional associations, not a legend written by Leonardo.

CHROMATIC READING TO BE FORMULATED WITH CAUTION
05

Hands

Gabriel's right hand states; the left offers. At Marie's, one hand remains near the book and the other rises. The story first passes through a grammar of gesture.

VISUAL SYNTAX OF SPEECH
06

Cypress and distant

Dark trees may suggest duration or eternity, but they are mainly used to measure depth. Their sharpness contrasts with the bluish mountains dissolved in the air.

SPATIAL FUNCTION ABOVE ALL
THE FACE AND THE LANDSCAPE

Two silences to bring together

The detail of the face shows an almost immobile restraint. The landscape multiplies the traffic routes. Their contrast gives the scene its tension: the event is internal, but its consequences involve the whole world.

DETAIL · MARIEA look that does not seek the viewer

The eyes follow Gabriel's presence without theatricality. The spread fingers give the gesture a measured hesitation: surprise, listening and assent remain simultaneous.

Detail of the port, boats and mountains in the distance
DETAIL · THE HORIZONA port between precision and dissolution

Boats, towers and docks remain readable; the mountains lose contrast and color. Leonardo makes the thickness of the air felt before later theorizing atmospheric perspective in his notebooks.

GEOMETRY AND OPTICS

Is the perspective "false"?

The table combines three logics: a linear construction which orders the architecture, an atmospheric perspective which digs into the landscape and local deformations which have nourished several hypotheses.

THREE LEVELS

Build, mitigate, correct

1. Linear perspective. The orthogonal architecture and paving organize a regulated space around a central vanishing point. The garden wall stabilizes a long horizontal.

2. Atmospheric perspective. The distance becomes lighter, bluer and less contrasted. Depth therefore comes not only from geometry, but from the way air modifies vision.

3. Local deformations. Marie's right arm seems too long and the relationship between her body, the desk and the architecture seems unstable when you look at the panel from the front.

Official hypothesis, not verdict: the Offices propose that certain disproportions were provided for a location where the work was viewed from the right and from below. As the original order and position are not documented, this explanation remains plausible, unproven.
Facing the panel

The elongation is visible

Marie's arm, hand, desk and legs do not fit together with perfect regularity.

From the right

The shape shortens

An oblique view can compensate for certain lengths, such as in optical corrections intended for a specific location.

What is missing

The original altar

Without a contract or a preserved installation, it is impossible to reconstruct exactly the expected distance, height and angle.

DRAWING AS A LABORATORY

Changing the point of view changes the image

This sheet kept at the Met is not a direct study for The Annunciation, but it reveals a method. In the lower right angle, Leonardo seeks to understand a perspective projection in relation to the position of the observer. The problem of the gaze is therefore not a modern commentary placed on his work: it belongs to his research.

In the Uffizi painting, classical Florentine geometry is no longer enough. The viewer must also feel the distance, the passage of light and the modification of shapes according to the angle of observation. The visible depends on a situation: an eye, a height, a side, a quantity of air.

This culture of experience explains why two extremes must be avoided. Saying the painting is "poorly drawn" ignores optics. Saying that every anomaly is a brilliant correction ignores the lack of evidence on the original installation.

ACTUAL PHOTOGRAPHY · FLORENCE

A city that learns to direct the gaze

The current view of the Offices offers an educational comparison, not a direct source of the painting. The long side galleries, the narrowing of the lines and the axis towards Palazzo Vecchio immediately make the power of a space built by convergence noticeable.

In The Annunciation, the geometric principle is more discreet. The wall, architecture and desk provide a rational framework; trees, boats and mist overflow it. The gaze is led, then freed.

This is one of the most modern tensions on the panel: the world can be measured without being entirely reduced to measurement. Perspective traces a route; the atmosphere prevents the distance from becoming a simple grid.

UNDER THE COLOR

Prepare, transfer, adjust

Infrared reflectography passes through certain pictorial layers and makes visible carbon elements of the preparatory drawing. It does not show a "first complete version" as a hidden photograph, but traces, repeats and differences between preparation and surface.

The Uffizi describe the painting as oil on wood. The panel belongs to a phase where Florentine painters explore the possibilities of oil: more flexible transitions, luminous details, depth of tones and material effects. In young Leonardo, these means already serve the continuity between skin, fabric, vegetation and air.

Gabriel's folds remain clean and sculptural; the landscape, on the contrary, gradually loses its contours. Unity therefore does not come from a uniform touch, but from an adaptation of the technique to the distance and nature of each motif.

What infrared proves: the table was prepared and modified during the work. What he doesn't prove alone: the identity of each hand that participated in all areas of the panel.
ATTRIBUTION AND WORKSHOP

A Leonardo still close to Verrocchio

Present The Annunciation as the isolated gesture of an already independent genius distorts its context. Around 1472, Leonardo was trained in the studio of Andrea del Verrocchio, where painting, sculpture, goldsmithing, drawing and mechanics rub shoulders. A large panel can mobilize shared models, collective preparations and several levels of intervention.

The shape of the desk is the most concrete clue to this environment. The Uffizi compare it to an invention by Verrocchio inspired by the tomb of Piero the Goutteux in San Lorenzo. The painting therefore transforms a sculptural memory into pictorial furniture.

The attribution to Leonardo is today widely accepted, without removing questions about the functioning of the workshop and the possible participation of other hands. The most "Leonardian" signs are not only virtuoso details: they are the coherence of the movement, attention to the living and the idea that the air itself must be painted.

ORIGIN

From the monastery of Monteoliveto to the Uffizi

The sign enters the Uffizi in 1867 from the San Bartolomeo church in Monteoliveto, located outside the Porta San Frediano in Florence. This provenance is documented; However, it is not enough to identify the initial order.

The Offices specify that the place of origin and the sponsor remain unknown. It is therefore necessary to distinguish the last attested religious context from the installation for which the work was designed. It is precisely this gap that makes any reconstruction from a lateral point of view difficult.

The modern history of the painting also accompanies the recognition of Leonardo's youth. Entering a public collection, the panel can be compared to the artist's drawings, works and other paintings. Its reputation as a "work of learning" then ceases to mean a minor work.

A work to look at from afar, then from the side

The official notice places the sign in the room A35 Leonardo da Vinci. Its 222 cm width requires two reading distances. From a distance, we can grasp the long continuity of the wall, the bodies and the horizon. Up close, flowers, feathers, embroidery, books and boats appear.

Then move slightly to the right, without disturbing other visitors. This change does not magically "resolve" all the proportions, but it allows you to concretely understand the hypothesis from an oblique point of view.

Check the room and the exhibition condition before visiting: loans, work or rotations may occasionally modify the route. The Office sheet remains the most reliable source.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

The Annunciation in eight answers

When did Leonardo da Vinci paint The Annunciation?

The Uffizi Gallery dates it to around 1472. Some publications give a slightly wider range around 1472 -1475. In all cases it is a youthful work.

Where is the original painting located?

At the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, in room A35 Leonardo da Vinci, under inventory number 1890 n° 1618. The hanging may occasionally change.

What are its dimensions?

The panel measures 90 × 222 cm. Its very horizontal format is essential: it creates a narrative distance between Gabriel and Mary and gives a large place to the garden and the landscape.

What does Gabriel's lily symbolize?

The white lily is traditionally associated with the purity of the Virgin. It also serves as a visual link between the angel's hand, the garden and the central space of the composition.

Why is Mary reading a book?

The book refers to the Scriptures, meditation and wisdom of Mary. The exact passage is not readable: it is better to avoid identifying a specific prophecy without material proof.

Why does Mary's arm seem too long?

Seen from the front, his right arm appears disproportionate. The Offices suggest a possible correction for a spectator placed on the right and lower, but the original location is not known, this hypothesis cannot be considered demonstrated.

Did Leonardo paint the work alone?

The attribution to Leonardo is widely accepted, but the panel was born in the context of Verrocchio's workshop. As with many great works of the Renaissance, the preparation and certain interventions may have been part of workshop work.

What is the difference between linear perspective and atmospheric perspective?

Linear perspective constructs space through lines and a vanishing point. Atmospheric perspective changes contrast, sharpness and color with distance. The Annunciation use both.
