The best books on Leonardo da Vinci

Biographies, notebooks, exhibition catalogs and major studies: nine truly different works, classified according to what you are looking for - a first discovery, Leonardo's words, his paintings or the state of research.

Our principle: no “best universal” book. The right choice depends on your level, the language, the time available and the space you give to the images.

Which book to buy first?

Start with Isaacson, then choose your direction

For a first lively and well-documented biography, Walter Isaacson is the simplest choice. If you want a great French biography, take it Serge Bramly. To read Leonardo himself, choose them Notebooks in Quarto. To understand the tables, the louvre catalog and Daniel Arasse are more precise than a general biography.

01 · Biographies

Understanding a life without creating a myth

A good biography should distinguish between archives, late Vasari stories and modern hypotheses. It must also resist the temptation to transform each drawing into a functional invention. The two titles below do not have the same voice: one favors narration and intellectual correspondences, the other historical continuity and the Italian context.

The most accessible

Leonardo da Vinci

Walter Isaacson · Quanto Pocket

Isaacson constructs a very readable portrait from the notebooks: curiosity, observation, slowness, abandoned projects and constant circulation between art and science. The book works particularly well for a reader who does not yet know the codices or the Italian chronology.

Why choose itClear narration, numerous connections between drawings, paintings and personality.
To knowSome psychological interpretations are more affirmative than the sources allow.

The French classic

Leonardo da Vinci, a biography

Serge Bramly · JC Lattès

Initially published in 1988 then extensively revised, this biography retains a rare quality: it restores the world of Florence, Milan, Rome and Amboise without isolating Leonardo in a legend of solitary “genie”. The writing is more literary than a scientific catalog, but the story remains attentive to the documents.

Why choose itThe best compromise in French between breadth, context and reading pleasure.
To knowLess focused on recent scientific examinations of paintings than the Louvre catalog.

Isaacson or Bramly?

Choose Isaacson for the narrative momentum and bridges between disciplines. Choose Bramly if you prefer a more historical French biography more attentive to the social environment. Reading them one after the other is not redundant: their architecture and their way of interpreting the silences of the sources differ.

02 · Notebooks and drawings

Read Leonardo rather than just read about him

The” “carnets are not a continuous diary. The approximately 7,000 preserved sheets are scattered among numerous codices and collections. Modern editions select, translate and reorganize these fragments. We must therefore always look at who established the text and according to what principle.

The large French volume

Notebooks

Leonardo da Vinci · edition Pascal Brioist · Quarto Gallimard

It is the richest gateway in French to Leonardoian writings. The volume brings together the revised translation from Edward MacCurdy, accompanies it with a critical apparatus and places it in a history of manuscripts. We encounter anatomy, water, flight, optics, painting, machines, fables and lists of astonishing everyday life.

The big advantage is the continuity of reading in a single volume. The limit is also that of any anthology: the thematic order does not exactly restore the physical appearance, the double-sided and the graphic neighborhoods of each original sheet.

Why choose itThe most practical French-speaking sum for consulting texts.
To knowIt is neither a full facsimile of all codices nor a chronological journal.

Leonardo da Vinci: A Mind in Motion

Juliana Barone (dir.) · British Library

Based on the Arundel, Forster II and Leicester codices, the book follows a central idea: movement. Water, mechanics, body and thought are shown on a large scale. The reproductions help to understand that a page by Leonardo is a visual composition, not just a text to be translated.

Why choose itCompact, very visual, excellent complement to the Notebooks.

The Marvelous Works of Nature and Man

Martin Kemp · Oxford University Press

Kemp does not treat notebooks as a cabinet of spectacular inventions. He reconstructs the intellectual logic that links observation of nature, proportions, optics, anatomy and painting. It is one of the best books for understanding how Leonardo produced knowledge through drawing.

Why choose itA major, precise and lasting intellectual synthesis.

03 · Studies and catalogs

See the works, understand the methods

A biography tells a trajectory. An exhibition catalog or a catalog raisonné asks other questions: attribution, material condition, preparatory drawings, restorations, provenances and direct comparison of works. This is where the quality of reproductions and notices becomes decisive.

Leonardo da Vinci

Daniel Arasse · Hazan

Arasse seeks the deep coherence of a work often dispersed under the convenient label of “génie universale”. He analyzes sfumato, the analogies between the body and the world, the movement of water, the smile and the time of painting. It's a book to read slowly, images at your fingertips.

An old catalog can remain excellent

The publication date is not enough to judge a work. On the other hand, attributions, restorations and scientific images evolve. For a specific question - for example the Salvator Mundi, the second Virgin of the rocks or the intervention of the workshop - always compare several publications and the notices of the museum which preserves the work.

Recommended routes

Build your library without duplicates

The most expensive purchase isn't necessarily the most useful. Combine different functions: a story for chronology, sources for thought, a catalog for images. This gives you a more reliable view than with three general biographies.

1

Just one book

  1. Isaacson if you are just starting out.
  2. Louvre catalog if your priority is painting.
  3. Notebooks if you already know life and want the sources.
3

The ideal library

  1. Bramly for the historical trajectory.
  2. Notebooks, Quarto for the texts.
  3. Louvre catalog for works and methods.
5

The advanced route

  1. Add Arasse for interpretation.
  2. Then Kemp for art and science.
  3. Reserve Bambach to continued research.

Frequently asked questions

Choose your book on Leonardo da Vinci wisely

What is the best biography of Leonardo da Vinci in French?

For a first reading, Walter Isaacson's translation is the most accessible. For a classic and more historical French biography, Serge Bramly remains an excellent choice. Neither replaces a specialized catalog for questions of attribution or pictorial technique.

Is there a complete edition of Leonardo's notebooks?

Not in the form of a single full journal. The manuscripts are scattered among numerous codices and collections. Quarto Gallimard offers a vast organized and annotated French selection, but it is not the exhaustive facsimile of all the preserved sheets.

Which book contains the most images of the paintings?

For a manageable volume, Frank Zöllner's catalog at TASCHEN offers a very good panorama. The Louvre catalog adds more scientific analyzes and preparatory drawings. The XXL edition of TASCHEN offers larger images but requires a significantly higher budget and space.

Which book should you choose to understand Leonardo's inventions?

Martin Kemp is preferable to sensationalist compilations: he places machines in research on nature, movement and representation. Complete it with the Notebooks or A Mind in Motion to view the handwritten pages.

Are beautiful books reliable on attributions?

Not automatically. Check the author, date, records and the distinction between autograph work, workshop, copy and discussed attribution. A recent museum catalog is generally more explicit than an unsigned picture album.

Should you buy books in English?

No to begin with: Isaacson, Bramly, Arasse, the Carnets and the Louvre catalog already constitute a very solid French library. English becomes useful for accessing Martin Kemp, Carmen Bambach and certain manuscript catalogs.
