Art galleries in Wakefield: directory, map and artistic districts

35 galleries, museums, workshops and tours, including 20 addresses offering works for sale

Wakefield is one of the British capitals of sculpture: Barbara Hepworth was born there, Henry Moore grew up in Castleford and two major institutions - The Hepworth Wakefield and Yorkshire Sculpture Park - structure the territory. Around them, Westgate, the Waterfront, Artwalk and the Five Towns form a living network of workshops, galleries and places to acquire works.

Understanding the Wakefield art scene

A city of sculpture supported by artists, public collections and former industrial sites

Wakefield is not just about two famous museums. The municipal collection, established in the 1930s, found a contemporary setting on the banks of the Calder at the Hepworth. To the west, Yorkshire Sculpture Park transforms the estate Bretton Hall as an exhibition landscape. Between the two, Westgate Studios, The Art House, Artwalk and the Waterfront spaces maintain daily artistic practice. Pontefract, Castleford, Horbury, Ossett and Overton expand then the journey to local fine arts, industrial history and public art.

01

Start with the sculpture

Combine The Hepworth Wakefield, the waterfront garden and Yorkshire Sculpture Park. Castleford Museum completes this story by placing Henry Moore in his hometown.

02

Visit Westgate at the right time

The Art House operates year-round, but Westgate Studios, The Art Exchange and many associated venues are especially evident during Artwalk and Open Studios.

03

Separate center and district

The center and the Waterfront can be explored on foot. West Bretton, Overton, Pontefract and Castleford require another half day or a car; Leeds remains a simple train excursion.

In Wakefield, sculpture connects the center, landscape and industrial history

The strength of the course comes from its changes in scale: the galleries of the Hepworth, the five hundred acres of the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, the studios of Westgate and the small places of the district tell of the same culture of production, of transmission and experimentation. By preparing the schedules, two days are already enough to connect the major works to the artists working today.
