Three zones are enough to understand an entire career
Start on the second floor with room 2.8, dedicated to the first decades of the 17th centurye century: Jeremiah mourning the destruction of Jerusalem and the portrait probably identified with Maria Trip shows the chiaroscuro, the story and the success of the young portraitist. Then join the Gallery of Honor for The Standard Bearer, l'Self-portrait as an apostle Paul, The Jewish Bride and The Trustees. Finish in the room specially designed for The Night Watch.

From the Cuypers building to the Gallery of Honor
Even before the paintings, the architecture organizes the route. The facade announces a museum designed as a national monument; the Atrium brings together reception services; the Gallery of Honor leads the eye towards the room The Night Watch.
Jeremy: the little one painting which slows down the gaze
At twenty-four, Rembrandt already organizes several story scales. The prophet forms a silent mass in the foreground; Jerusalem burns in a tiny opening on the left. Light does not uniformly fill space: it strikes the turban, wrinkled flesh, blue cloak and precious objects of the temple.
Approach to observe the dialogue between detail and darkness, then step back. This work ideally prepares the visit: it shows that in Rembrandt light selects, tells and prioritizes.
Maria Trip: Glaring Colorless Wealth
The model is probably Maria Trip, but the Rijksmuseum cautiously maintains this identification as probable rather than certain. In 1639, the black of the garment did not mean austerity. Lace, beads, brooch, buckles ears and rare Chinese folding fan make up a prestigious inventory.
Watch how the face remains softer than jewelry. The eye moves from the white collar to the beads, then to the hand holding the fan.

The Jewish Bride: looking at the hands before the faces
The traditional title does not say with certainty a real Jewish bride. The museum today identifies the couple with Isaac and Rebecca.
The red dress is constructed by thick layers, impasto and incisions. Stand slightly aside: the light from the museum then catches the reliefs.
Trustees: You're the Interruption
Commissioned in 1662 by officials of the drapers' guild, the painting builds the impression of a moment: the men look up as if the visitor had just entered.
The Night Watch: see the entire composition first
Five or six meters away
Identify the general movement: the diagonal of the spear, the captain's gesture, the clear lieutenant and the company that sets out.
As close as possible
Look for hand shadow, dog, arquebusier and texture changes.
Don't start by photographing. Look for a whole minute: the painting reads like a crowd getting organized.
