Immediate response

Why is the Hermitage a major stop to see Rembrandt?

Because the museum brings together, in the same tour, spectacular historical paintings, intimate biblical scenes, late portraits and two universal summits: Danae and The Return of the Prodigal Son. More than an inventory, this set makes it possible to follow the painter's movement: from the dramatic effect towards a more interior light.

The St. Petersburg collection was established in the 18th centurye century, when Catherine II and her agents purchased entire collections in Europe. It therefore also reflects the history of taste: what imperial amateurs admired in Rembrandt, what ancient catalogs attributed to him, then what modern research has confirmed, moved to the workshop or returned to a student. It is prudent not to freeze a number of "authentic Rembrandts": attributions remain a living domain.

Recommended route

A Rembrandt journey in five stages

Room numbers and hangings may change. Check the official plan on the day of the visit, then use this common thread rather than a hard list.

0 -20 min

1. Entering through the 1630s

Start with Flora, The Descent from the Cross and Isaac's Sacrifice. Observe the young master's taste for fabrics, diagonals, gestures stopped at the edge of the action.

20 -45 min

2. Stop in front Danae

Step back to grab the body in space, then move closer to the covers painting. The painting combines invention of 1636, later modifications and exceptionally eventful material history.

45 -70 min

3. Go from show to intimate

With The Holy Family with angels and David and Jonathan, compare domestic light, the gesture of consolation and less demonstrative emotions.

70 -95 min

4. Read late faces

The Old man in red tells almost nothing. Its presence comes from impasto, muffled reds and the slow construction of the face.

95 -120 min

5. End with the return

Keep at least fifteen minutes to The Return of the Prodigal Son. Alternate overview, father's hands, son's feet and side figures: meaning arises from their distances.

Before the room

Understanding the scale of the museum

The main building is located on Palace Square, in the heart of St. Petersburg. Its apartments, ceremonial staircases and long rows can exhaust attention before even reaching the Dutch paintings. A visit centered on Rembrandt therefore benefits from being prepared: locate the gallery, give yourself a break, then return to the large formats with an available perspective.

The whole thing is not a reconstruction of the Amsterdam workshop. It is a collector's collection, forged by imperial acquisitions, transfers, restorations and scholarly rereadings. This story explains both its power and its areas of uncertainty.

Tip: don't try to "do the whole Hermitage" on the same day. A Rembrandt journey becomes richer if you associate it with a few neighboring Dutch works, then if you leave the room before visual fatigue.

1634 - 1635

The Young Master: Costume, Movement and Drama

Early in his Amsterdam career, Rembrandt wanted to prove that he could paint anything: silk and fur, an overturned body, an angel in flight, the fear of a father and the brilliance of an ancient heroine.

Flora de Rembrandt, 1634, young woman crowned with flowers
Flora, 1634oil on canvas, 125 × 101 cm. The model is generally identified with Saskia van Uylenburgh, married by Rembrandt the same year.
Rembrandt's Descent from the Cross, 1634, at the Hermitage Museum
The Descent from the Cross, 1634oil on canvas× 117 cm, approximately 158 × 117 cm. The light tightens the action around the body of Christ.
The Sacrifice of Isaac de Rembrandt, 1635, with the angel arresting Abraham
Isaac's Sacrifice, 1635oil on canvas× 132 cm, approximately 193 × 132 cm. The angel interrupts the knife: the whole scene is contained in this collision of gestures.

Flora transforms a costumed portrait into a mythological apparition. The flowers, the embroidered sleeve and the floral stick are not simple accessories: they organize a tactile profusion. However, the identity of the model should not be stated as an absolute documentary certainty. The resemblance to Saskia, the context of 1634 and the tradition of identification make the hypothesis strong, without transforming it painting in civilian portrait.

In both biblical scenes, the human body becomes the location of the story. Christ descends diagonally into an almost compact darkness; Isaac is immobilized by his father's hand while the other hand, that of the angel, changes destiny. Light not only illustrates: it prioritizes time, selecting the irreversible moment.

Restored masterpiece

Danae : one body, two beats of painting

Started in 1636 then largely resumed, Danae represents the princess visited by Zeus, without showing the golden rain expected by traditional iconography. The outstretched arm welcomes an off-camera presence. The monumental bed, the curtain, the linen and the servant build less of an ancient decor than a room made palpable by light.

Technical analyzes showed significant transformations. The appearance of the face and body has been modified; linking each state to a specific model, however, remains an interpretation. The solid fact is material: Rembrandt is returned to the web, shifting her balance and her type of beauty.

In 1985, the work was attacked with acid and lacerated. A long-term restoration stabilized and re-entered the surface; THE painting returned to theaters in 1997, protected. This story requires careful reading: what we see is both one painting from the 17th centurye century and the visible result of a modern rescue.

Compare periods

From the twist of theater to the silent presence

Period Reference works Light Gesture and material Effect on the visitor
1630s Flora, Descent from the cross, Sacrifice of Isaac, Danae Directed contrasts, bursts on skin and tissues Diagonals, expressive hands, made precious Surprise and narrative tension
1640s David and Jonathan, Holy Family with angels Enveloping clarity, domestic focus Tight gestures, contained emotion Proximity and compassion
1650s -1660s Old man in red, Return of the Prodigal Son Warm shade, thick light areas Impasto, friction, open contours Duration, silence, meditation

This evolution should not become too simple a fable where the young virtuoso would mechanically transform into a wise man. Rembrandt continues to experiment in each period. What changes most is the way of distributing attention: brilliant objects and culminating gestures gradually give way from the terrain to irregular surfaces, silences and relationships between figures.

The 1640s

Emotion changes scale

The Holy Family with Angels by Rembrandt, 1645, Hermitage Museum
The Holy Family with angels, 1645The sacred scene borrows the vocabulary of a lived interior: cradle, work, fire and daily light.
David and Jonathan de Rembrandt, 1642, farewell scene at the Hermitage Museum
David and Jonathan, 1642The embrace concentrates a farewell story. The ancient identification of the scene was debated before biblical reading became necessary.

In The Holy Family, the supernatural - the angels in the upper part - does not destroy domestic credibility. He extends it. The child is protected in a space where the sacred passes through care, work and warmth. Color, dominated by browns and gold, brings together what would be elsewhere separated.

David and Jonathan works the opposite: space empties around two bodies. The hidden face, the luminous fabric and the distant landscape give shape to a separation. It's a good one painting to test the difference between "subject" and "experience": knowing the biblical episode helps, but the emotional structure remains readable before any explanation.

Matter thinks

The Old man in red

The costume is no longer used to display a clearly identifiable rank. It forms a warm mass against which the face appears, unravels and reappears. From a distance, the man seems firmly present; up close, the skin is a succession of lapses, streaks and thicknesses.

This voltage is central in the painting late by Rembrandt. THE painting does not give the illusion of a smooth surface: it shows the work necessary to make someone exist. It would be tempting to read a psychological biography there - fatigue, wisdom, poverty - but these words go beyond what the image documented. What we can establish is a pictorial strategy: slow down the gaze by making the material visible.

Observe: step back three meters, then approach until you see the key. The optical identity of the face arises precisely between these two distances.

See a room, not a thumbnail

Hanging changes the reading

In the gallery, the paintings share museum architecture, height and light. The large format of the Return of the Prodigal Son can only be fully understood in relation to the visitor's body. Small tonal deviations that the screen compresses become noticeable again.

A photograph of the room also reminds us that the visit is mobile: we first see one painting sideways, behind other people, then we negotiate a distance. Enjoy these trips. A work by Rembrandt does not offer the same image ten meters, two meters and almost at the edge of the frame.

Reliability

Established facts and interpretations to be qualified

Documented facts

  • Flora is dated 1634 and belongs to the Hermitage.
  • Danae was started in 1636, modified, attacked in 1985 then restored.
  • The Return of the Prodigal Son entered the imperial collection in 1766.
  • The collection owes an essential part of its training to the purchases of Catherine II.
  • The attributions have been re-examined by modern research.

Plausible, not absolute readings

  • The model of Flora is generally recognized as Saskia.
  • The transformations of Danae may correspond to a change in design or model, without an artist's journal to explain it.
  • The father of Back can embody forgiveness, but the theology specifies painting remains interpretive.
  • Late faces suggest an inner life; they do not constitute psychological diagnoses.
  • The number of autograph works depends on the catalog and the date of consultation.

Look for yourself

Six gestures to read a Rembrandt

1

Frame action

Locate the main diagonal, the voids and the figure that receives the first brightness.

2

Follow the hands

They stop, welcome, bless or hold back. Their syntax often precedes that of faces.

3

Map the light

Ask yourself what it reveals, but also what it deliberately leaves incomplete.

4

Compare the edges

A clear outline asserts; a melted outline circulates the body in the shadows.

5

Change distance

Nearby, see matter; as you step back, observe how it becomes flesh and space.

6

Separate see and know

First write down what is visible, then add the narrative, provenance, and assumptions.

Frequently asked questions

FAQ - Rembrandt at the Hermitage

What is Rembrandt's most famous work in the Hermitage?

The Return of the Prodigal Son is generally considered the top of the whole. Danae is just as major in its ambition, its redesigns and its history of restoration.

What room are the Rembrandts in?

Room 254 of the main complex is the usual landmark. However, a loan, restoration or new display can move a work: check the official plan.

How many Rembrandts does the Hermitage have?

Historical figures vary and do not always correspond to the current number of autograph works. Reallocations to the workshop or students explain these discrepancies; It is better to consult the catalog online on the date of the visit.

Flora does she really represent Saskia?

Identification is widely accepted thanks to the resemblance and context of 1634, the year of marriage. It remains a scholarly identification, not a name written by Rembrandt in an explanatory document.

Why Danae is she protected?

The painting suffered an acid and knife attack in 1985. After a twelve-year restoration, it returned to theaters in 1997 with appropriate protection.

The Return of the Prodigal Son is he the last painting from Rembrandt?

It is generally dated around 1668, shortly before the artist's death in 1669, but it cannot be designated with certainty as his ultimate painting.

Can we photograph in the rooms?

Rules may vary depending on exhibitions, works and materials. Consult official signage and conditions; never use flash when prohibited.

How much time to devote to the course?

Allow around two hours for the eight commented works, more if the room is busy or if you are comparing neighboring Dutch painters.
