Understanding the Le Havre scene
A city born from the port, rebuilt by architecture and revealed by light
Le Havre has a unique artistic history. Eugène Boudin observes the changing skies there, Claude Monet paints there Print, rising sun, then the Circle of Modern Art brought together Dufy, Friesz, Braque and their allies. After 1944, Auguste Perret rebuilt the center according to a framework of concrete, proportions and light today classified by UNESCO. The current galleries extend this relationship to the landscape, while Un Été Au Havre installs the creation directly in the streets, on the quays and facing the sea.
Start with the light
At MuMa and on the seafront, compare the painted landscapes with the real sky, the reflections of the basin and the port horizon.
Read Reconstruction
The Perret model apartment, the Niemeyer library and the Galerie S7 show how architecture, furniture and decorative arts respond to each other.
Get out of the frame
The lasting works of Un Été Au Havre transform the entire city into a journey: monumental sculpture, visitable installation and landscape art.

Center Perret · place Perret

Southampton Wharf · port
Catena of containers - Vincent Ganivet
Southampton Wharf, 76600 Le Havre
Two container arches rise to nearly thirty meters and materialize the link between the city and its port. The balance designed by Vincent Ganivet transforms a familiar logistical tool into a monumental gate, which has become one of the visual emblems of Le Havre.
Beach · Porte Océane
Up #3 - Lang & Baumann
Beach walk, 76600 Le Havre
This white structure cuts the horizon along the axis of Avenue Foch and Porte Océane. Between sculpture, furniture and fragments of architecture, Up #3 changes with the sky and reveals the geometry of the Perret center from the pebbles.
Seafront · square Claude-Érignac
Narrow House - Erwin Wurm
Square Claude Érignac, 76600 Le Havre
Erwin Wurm compresses his childhood home to the point of making rooms and furniture almost impassable. The absurd humor of this visitable installation opens a reflection on memory, norm and social narrowness in a garden close to the seafront.
Maritime center · Commerce basin
Impact - Stéphane Thidet
Bassin du Commerce, 76600 Le Havre
At regular intervals, two powerful jets cross the pool and meet in a brief, sometimes iridescent form. Impact forces us to wait and look at the water differently: the work exists as much in its appearance as in the silence that follows it.
Saint-François · Roy basin
Ghost Gardens - Baptiste Debombourg
Bassin du Roy, 76600 Le Havre
Metal motifs inspired by François I's bedroom at the Château de Blois adorn the walls of the Roy basin. Tides, algae and shells gradually modify the work, making the port itself the material for a moving French garden.
Caucriauville · Pre-Flowering
Parable - Alexandre Moronnoz
Pré-Fleuri, 76610 Le Havre
Placed on the heights, this gigantic wooden corolla serves as a sculpture, a seat and a belvedere. You can meet there, play or contemplate the estuary: a work of communication which paradoxically favors shared physical presence.
Seafront · square Saint-Roch
The Moon has landed in Le Havre - Arthur Gosse
Square Saint-Roch, 76600 Le Havre
A concrete moon rests on the surface of a vegetated pool and lights up at nightfall. Adopted by the people of Le Havre after its first appearance, the work of Arthur Gosse brings together the material of Reconstruction, the spatial imagination and the rhythm of the tides.
