Federico Barocci was born around 1533 in Urbino, a humanist city where ducal collections gave him access to Raphael, Titian and the masters of the Renaissance. Son of a watchmaker, he received initial family training before reaching Rome in the 1550s. There he met the entourage of Taddeo and Federico Zuccaro and participated in the decorations of the Vatican.
