circa 1618 -1678 · Rustic landscape and Dutch animal nature
Born in Heusden around 1618, Dirck Wijntrack worked in Rotterdam, Gouda then The Hague. His painting focuses on rustic landscapes, farmyards and carefully observed animals. In his compositions, a dead trunk, a pond, a fence or a path often forms the foreground, while a luminous escape opens the view towards a calm plain. This construction maintains close links with the art of Jan Wijnants: the motifs of the two painters have sometimes caused confusion of attribution. Wijntrack also collaborates with Joris van der Haagen, adding living animals and details to his partner's landscapes. His goats, poultry and birds are not simple accessories; they give the scale, rhythm and daily life of the land. Around 1657, he seemed to reduce or abandon his activity as a painter to exercise administrative functions with the States of Holland and West Friesland. He died in The Hague in 1678, leaving a tight corpus where naturalist observation and poetry of the landscape were balanced. The "Dirck Wijntrack" selection notably compares Rustic landscape - dead trees, path and pond. His reading favors composition.
Wijntrack makes the edges speak: a dead tree, a pond and a few animals are enough to measure the weather, the season and rural life.
