Jean II Restout was born in Rouen in 1692 into a family of Norman painters. His father Jean I Restout, his mother Marie Jouvenet and several uncles transmitted to him an early artistic culture; his godfather and master Jean Jouvenet taught him above all to construct vast religious scenes animated by powerful bodies. Restout reached Paris around 1707 and won the Grand Prix de l'Académie in 1717 with a subject taken from the Aeneid. Received at the Royal Academy in 1720, he led a brilliant career there up to the functions of director and chancellor. Received at the Royal Academy in 1720, he led a brilliant career there up to the functions of director and chancellor. Most of his work, however, remained linked to churches, abbeys and religious communities. Pentecost was painted in 1732 for the refectory of the Abbey of Saint-Denis. The apostles and the Virgin are united in solemn architecture when the Spirit descends in the form of light and fire. Restout organizes the multitude with a circular movement: raised gazes, open arms and agitated draperies lead towards the upper luminous focus. The elongated bodies, small heads and supple fabrics give the impression that an invisible breath runs through the entire composition. This energy distinguishes Restout from his uncle Jouvenet, whose elongated bodies, small heads and supple fabrics nevertheless give the impression that an invisible breath runs through the entire composition. This energy distinguishes Restout from his uncle Jouvenet, whose taste for large formats and real observation he nevertheless extends. Close to Jansenist circles, he also paints devotional figures, miracles and portraits where interior intensity matters more than decor. He designed tapestry boxes for the Gobelins and transmitted his teaching to the Academy. His Essay on the Principles of Painting, published after his death, preserves precepts collected from several masters. Died in Paris in 1768, Restout leaves a religious art that is at once scholarly, visionary and deeply corporeal. The "Jean II Restout" selection notably compares Pentecost. His reading favors the material.
At Restout, light does not just illuminate: it acts on bodies, lifts draperies and transforms an assembly into a spiritual community.
