Nicolas de Largillierre was born in Paris in 1656, trained in Antwerp then stayed in England with the circles of Peter Lely and Antonio Verrio. Returning to Paris around 1680, he benefited from the support of Charles Le Brun and entered the Royal Academy in 1686, which he directed in 1738.
