The National Gallery of Art brings together European masters, American art, graphic arts, photography and modernity in two complementary buildings on the National Mall.
The National Gallery of Art was born from Andrew W. Mellon's desire to offer the United States a national museum comparable to the major European institutions. In 1936, he proposed his collection to President Franklin D. Roosevelt for funding of a building and the creation of an institution for the American people. Congress accepted the donation in 1937. Designed by John Russell Pope, the West Building was inaugurated on March 17, 1941; the initial core includes one hundred and twenty-six paintings and twenty-six sculptures. Other collectors, including Samuel H. Kress, Joseph Widener, Lessing Rosenwald and Paul Mellon, quickly transformed the museum into a "collection of collections". IM Pei's East Building opened in 1978 for modern and contemporary arts. Heritage today exceeds one hundred and fifty thousand works, from the Middle Ages to the present. Rembrandt, Boudin, Degas and Monet show in the selection the transition from religious drama to modern life, to leisure and movement. The selection "National Gallery of Art - Washington, DC., United States" notably compares Descent from the Cross - Rembrandt and Beach Scene - Eugène Boudin. His reading favors movement.
In Washington, a private foundation becomes national heritage: each major donation expands the story without erasing the identity of the collection that carried it.
