János Thorma crosses history painting, naturalism and post-impressionism making the Nagybanya colony a major center of Hungarian art.
Born in 1870 in Kiskunhalas, János Thorma grew up in Nagybánya, today Baia Mare. He trained in Munich with Simon Hollósy then in Paris at the Académie Julian. His initial ambition was towards great history painting, notably the events of the Hungarian revolution of 1848, but he also participated in 1896 in the founding of the Nagybánya artists' colony. Outdoor work, natural light and direct observation transformed his palette. Thorma taught, directed the school and remained attached to the colony for several decades. However, his work did not follow a single doctrine: historical scenes, portraits, nudes, landscapes and post-impressionist compositions testify to constant evolution. After 1919, the orchards, hills and figures of Nagybânya took an increasing place. He died in 1937 after having helped train several generations of Hungarian painters.
