Adolph Friedrich Erdmann Menzel was born in Breslau in 1815 and died in Berlin in 1905. Son of a lithographer, he took over the family workshop at a very young age after the death of his father and trained mainly on his own. Illustrations devoted to the history of Frederick the Great established his reputation in the 1830s and 1840s. To restore 18th century Prussia, he studied uniforms, weapons, furniture, architecture and gestures with exceptional documentary precision. However, Menzel does not limit himself to history painting. His small interior paintings, such as The Room on the Balcony, observed light, emptiness and perception from the 1840s with a freedom that announces impressionism. He draws constantly: hands, feet, passers-by, workers, horses, objects, crowds and shows. The Flute Concert at Sans-Souci combines historical reconstruction and psychological observation, while La Forge, or The Modern Cyclops, painted in 1875, confronts the viewer with the heat, noise and effort of industrial work.
