Marseille -Paris, 1824 -1886 · Thick color and theater of light
Adolphe Joseph Thomas Monticelli was born in Marseille in 1824 and died there in 1886. Formed between his hometown and Paris, he developed a painting immediately recognizable by its impasto, its deep tones and its sparkles which seem embedded in the surface. His court scenes do not reconstruct a precise historical episode: small characters, dresses, trees and architecture rather compose a colorful theater, sometimes inspired by gallant parties and memories of old masters. The Princess's Court, oil on wood measuring 38.1 × 59.4 cm, thus transforms the panel into a precious stage. Between 1879 and 1883, Monticelli created his most admired still lifes. Flowers in a vase blue, oil on wood of 67.3 × 48.9 cm, brings together the tones like a dense orchestration where the bouquet serves as a pretext for chromatic agreement. Cézanne and Van Gogh looked at his work with fascination. In Monticelli, a figure or a flower only becomes readable after the initial shock of the material and the color. The "Adolphe Monticelli" selection notably compares Four Figures and Flowers in a Vase. His reading favors drawing.
Monticelli does not place colors on a bouquet: he makes the bouquet the provisional event of a color that has become material.
