Court portrait between London and The Hague · 17th century
Adriaen Hanneman was born in The Hague in 1603 or 1604 and trained with Anthony van Ravesteyn. Having left for London in 1626, he worked there until 1638 and discovered English court portraiture. The arrival of Antoine van Dyck in 1632 exerted a lasting influence on him: aristocratic poses, supple fabrics, measured gestures and refined presence became the features of his language. Back in The Hague, Hanneman joined the guild of Saint-Luc in 1640, assumed several responsibilities then participated in 1656 in the founding of the Pictura Brotherhood. He painted members of the English court in exile and the House of Orange. In the Portrait of a Woman, the model calmly stands out; face, hairstyle, pearls and clothing reflect resemblance, rank and elegance at the same time. The light remains soft in order to preserve the natural dignity of the figure. The "Adriaen Hanneman" selection notably compares Portrait of a Woman - Adriaen Hanneman. His reading favors color.
Hanneman adapts Van Dyck's elegance to the taste of The Hague: the pose asserts rank, while the face maintains a calm and individual presence.
