From the devotional altarpiece to the great painting · Meditate before the dead Christ

The Lamentation over Christ explores the transformation of a devotional subject into a pictorial composition: Pietà close together, funeral group, transport of the body or scene lit like a vision.

The Lamentation over Christ invites less to follow a specific action than to remain before the body after the Crucifixion. The subject developed in medieval devotional culture to allow the faithful to contemplate the sufferings of Christ and the pain of those close to him. It can take the form of a Pietà, when the Virgin carries her son alone or almost, or of a collective lamentation bringing together John, Magdalene, the holy women, Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus. The tomb, sometimes already open, inscribes the scene in the passage towards burial; the landscape of Golgotha recalls the Cross; the ointments and the shroud announce the funeral rites. The composition regulates the distance emotional. Close framing brings the viewer's faces and hands together. A monumental group distributes reactions around the body. A transport diagonal introduces effort and time to the story. Chiaroscuro can finally isolate the remains as the focus of a silent revelation. The chosen works make these variations particularly readable. Bellini builds a gentle closeness between Mary, John and Christ. Botticelli organizes the group in linear and rhythmic pain. Rembrandt makes shadow and light the actors of contemplation. Raphael transforms the funeral transport into noble movement, where classical balance contains emotion without erasing it. There selection "Lamentation over Christ" notably compares Lamentation - Giovanni Bellini and Lamentation over the Dead Christ - Botticelli. Its reading favors atmosphere.

To lament about Christ is to suspend the story: between the Cross and the tomb, painting gives the eye time to measure the loss.
