Ambrosius Bosschaert the Elder was born in Antwerp in 1573 and died in The Hague in 1621. After the recapture of Antwerp by Spanish forces, his Protestant family emigrated to Middelburg, Zeeland. Bosschaert joined as master at the guild of Saint-Luc in 1593 and also held responsibilities there. In this port city, botanical gardens, international trade and the new passion for rare plants provided the context for his specialization. He composed bouquets that brought together tulips, roses, irises, fritillaries, daffodils and flowers of different seasons: the image therefore does not copy a real arrangement, but assembles studies carried out separately. Each species is painted with a precision close to botanical illustration, then balanced by color and silhouette. Chinese Wan-Li vases, transparent glasses, shells, butterflies and dragonflies add value, fragility and symbolic allusions. After Middelburg, Bosschaert worked in Amsterdam, Utrecht and Breda. His workshop trains his sons and his brother-in-law Balthasar van der Ast, ensuring the dissemination of a genre which would become one of the great specialties of the Dutch Golden Age.
