Bevagna -Rome, 1602 -1649 · Scholarly antiquity and baroque spectacle
Andrea Camassei was born in Bevagna, Umbria, in 1602 and died in Rome in 1649. After regional training, he developed his career in the papal capital, in contact with classicism and great baroque decor. He worked for the Barberini and participated in several monumental enterprises, including the family palace. The Lupercalian Festivals, painted around 1635, were commissioned for the History of Rome series at the Buen Retiro Palace. The subject is an ancient festival of purification and fertility associated with Pan and Lucina. After the sacrifice, men roamed the city and ritually struck women in order to promote fertility. Camassei brings together the altar, the statue divine, the participants and two young musicians equipped with wind instruments. The 238 × 366 cm canvas belongs to the most mysterious group in the cycle, devoted to cults and ancient stories. The artist transforms erudition into a readable show, where each gesture occupies a place in a vast horizontal composition. The "Andrea Camassei" selection notably compares Lupercalia Festivals. His reading favors the material.
Camassei not only reconstructs an ancient ceremony: he regulates a theater of bodies, music and beliefs around fertility.
