Naples, 1610 -1685 · Battle, biblical pastoral and Baroque antiquity
Andrea di Leone, also named Andrea di Lione, was born and died in Naples, from 1610 to 1685. He received initial training from the mannerist Belisario Corenzio, then entered the workshop of Aniello Falcone, a battle specialist. This double experience explains his ease in distributing horsemen, soldiers and large groups in monumental spaces. Around 1640, he participated in the cycle of the History of ancient Rome intended for the Buen Retiro palace in Madrid. In Elephants in a Circus, he assembled printed antiquarian sources, Falcone's little nervous figure and the memory of Poussin's bacchanals. His meeting with Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione, known as Grechetto, then inflects his art towards a more lyrical pastoral. Jacob's Journey thus associates an episode from Genesis with herds, travelers and a delicate light of ochres, grays and greens. Long confused with those of Falcone or Castiglione, his works today reveal a transitional personality: the energy of the battle meets the poetic scale of the Neapolitan landscape. The "Andrea di Leone" selection notably compares Jacob's fight with the angel and Elephants in a circus. In Andrea di Leone, the sacred or ancient subject becomes a migration of bodies, animals and light through a living landscape.
