Rochester · Since 1913 · Five millennia of art and cultures
The Memorial Art Gallery, often called MAG, opened in Rochester in 1913. Philanthropist Emily Sibley Watson financed the building in memory of her son, architect James Averell, and entrusted the institution to the University of Rochester. His ambition is twofold: to create a place of aesthetic pleasure and a means of education for all citizens. The museum begins with some paintings, casts and a piece of lace. Under the direction of George Herdle and then his daughters Gertrude and Isabel, he developed a balanced collection and educational programs strongly linked to the community. Several expansions accompanied this growth, notably a wing in 1926, a modern extension in 1968 and a pavilion with sculpture garden in the late 1980s. Today, more than thirteen thousand works cover approximately five thousand years and cultures from around the world. The selected paintings make this amplitude noticeable. Rembrandt builds a young man through light and psychological presence. Gérôme deploys architecture, carpets and details in a mosque interior. Monet transforms the rocks of Pourville into an experience of tide and atmosphere. Matisse simplifies the Venetian style with color, outline and decor. The "Memorial Art Gallery" selection notably compares Portrait of a Young Man in an Armchair - Rembrandt and Interior of a Mosque - Gérôme. His reading favor light.
The Memorial Art Gallery is a memorial, university museum and civic place: its global collection remains linked to a mission of access and learning.
