Antoine van Dyck, also known as Anthony van Dyck, was born in Antwerp in 1599 and died in London in 1641. Early, he was master of the guild of Saint Luke before the age of twenty and worked in Rubens' orbit. His series of apostles already show a lively touch, individualized faces and a spirituality without stiffness. After a first English stay, he traveled to Italy from 1621 to 1627. In Genoa, he renewed the aristocratic portrait with full-length formats, columns, sumptuous fabrics and slightly lowered viewpoints which gave the model a sovereign presence.
