Hague School and Silver Light · 1838 -1888
Anton Mauve was born in Zaandam in 1838 and died in 1888. Trained with the animal painter Pieter Frederik van Os then Wouter Verschuur, he became one of the main representatives of the Hague School. His landscapes favor dunes, beaches, wet paths and gray-green moors under cold, diffused light. Rather than spectacular contrasts, Mauve seeks unity of tone, this "silver" atmosphere which connects sky, terrain, figures and animals. From 1882, he worked regularly in Laren and settled there permanently in 1885; the flocks of sheep on the moor then became a motif in high demand in England and the United States. Parent by alliance of Vincent van Gogh, he gave him lessons in drawing, watercolor and painting in 1881. Shepherdesses, wood collectors and returns home show in Mauve a realism attentive to the hardness of the work as much as to the calm of the landscape. The "Anton Mauve" selection notably compares A Shepherdess and Her Herd - Anton Mauve and The Return to the Home - Anton Mauve. His reading favors space.
At Mauve, the herd does not only cross the moor: it measures the depth, silence and even humidity of the Dutch air.
