1854 -1938 · Orientalism, portrait and virtuosity
Born in Gràcia, Barcelona, in 1854, Antonio Maria Fabrés y Costa studied at Llotja as a sculptor and painter. Resident in Rome in 1875, he quickly adopted watercolor under the influence of Fortuny and enjoyed success thanks to valuable illustrations for books and magazines. His orientalism combines descriptive virtuosity, sumptuous textiles and dramatic staging. The Slave Woman, painted around 1886 in a monumental format of almost two and seventy meters, belongs to this vein. The female orientalism combines descriptive virtuosity, sumptuous textiles and dramatic staging. The Slave Woman, painted around 1886 in a monumental format of almost two and seventy meters, belongs to this vein. The female body, the costume and the luxurious frame produce a spectacular image, but its title and its location also require a critical reading today: pictorial elegance coexists with the representation of a person reduced to possession. The work thus joined contemporary reflections on ideology, the gaze and the place attributed to women in 19th century art. Fabrés obtained a second medal at the National Exhibition of 1887 with the watercolor A Thief. His fame then led him to Mexico, where he was called in 1904 as Inspector General of Fine Arts. Returning to Rome in 1908, he painted Benedict XV in 1916. The small panel concentrates the pontiff's authority in glasses, the Fisherman's ring, the armchair and an attentive physiognomy. Between the orientalist staging and this institutional portrait, the collection reveals the same precision put at the service of radically different subjects. The "Antonio Fabrés" selection notably compares Pope Benedict XV and Slave Woman. Its reading favors atmosphere.
Fabrés possesses a virtuosity capable of dazzling; looking at it today also requires distinguishing the mastery of painting and the ideology of the scene represented.
