Italian verismo, portrait and material experimentation · 1852 -1930
Antonio Mancini was born in Rome in 1852 and died there in 1930. His precocious talent allowed him to enter the Institute of Fine Arts in Naples at the age of twelve, where he studied with Domenico Morelli and Filippo Palizzi. Friend of the sculptor Vincenzo Gemito, he shared with him a poor youth and took as models children, traveling musicians and young acrobats from the Neapolitan streets. He Prevetariello and Il Saltimbanco combined veristic observation, chiaroscuro inherited from the 17th century and empathy without idealization. Mancini exhibited in Paris in 1872, then returned there in 1875 and worked with the merchant Goupil. Venetian painting, Paris and its international meetings clarified his palette, but he maintains a profoundly Italian path. A serious psychological crisis brought him back to Naples at the end of the 1870s. Installed in Rome in 1883, he slowly rebuilt his career thanks to Dutch, British and American support; John Singer Sargent particularly admires his talent. His painting becomes ever more material. He uses a grid of threads placed in front of the model and the canvas to control the proportions, then accumulates impasto, grid traces and sometimes fragments of glass, metal or fabric. Late portraits thus emerge from a shiny, bumpy and almost sculptural surface. Officially recognized at the end of his life, Mancini remains one unclassifiable experimenter between naturalism, verismo and modernity. The "Antonio Mancini" selection offers its own journey on this subject. Its reading favors details.
Mancini pushes resemblance to matter: the face is born from light, impasto and real fragments incorporated into the painting.
