Around 1516/1521 -1576 · The European face of the Habsburgs
Born in Utrecht around 1516 -1521 and probably died in Antwerp in 1576, Antonio Moro, or Anthonis Mor, trained with Jan van Scorel. His career took on a European dimension in the service of Cardinal Granvelle then of Marie of Hungary, governess of the Netherlands. From 1549, his travels took him to the Habsburg courts: he painted the Duke of Alba and the future Philip II, then Maximilian II, Mary of Austria, the Portuguese court and Mary Tudor in England. Moro combined the meticulousness of the northern portrait with Italian models, notably Titian. His figures, often in three quarters or full length, stand out against a neutral background under a light coming from the left. The pose is simple, monumental volume and retained expression. This economy makes the material signs all the more eloquent: gold chain, jewelry, fur, glove, embroidery or armchair. The collection brings together sovereigns - Philip II, Mary Tudor, Maximilian II, Catherine of Habsburg, Joan of Austria - but also several ladies whose identity remains debated. Perejon, jester linked to the houses of Benavente and Alba, shows that this rigor could also establish a personality outside of dynastic ceremonial. The circulation of these portraits accompanies marriages, alliances and negotiations; it constructs a common image of Habsburg power on a European scale. The selection " Antonio Moro" notably compares Portrait of a Lady and Lady with Golden Chains. His reading favors light.
Moro reduces the decor to increase the presence: the face remains reserved, while the gold, velvet and glove speak the rank with absolute precision.
