Venice, active from 1440 -1476/84 · Gold, workshop and miracle told
Antonio Vivarini was active in Venice from 1440 and died between 1476 and 1484. With his brother Bartolomeo, his partner Giovanni d'Alemagna then his son Alvise, he built a family business whose prestige was only surpassed by that of the Bellinis. Saint Jerome, produced by his workshop in the 1440s, is a tempera on wood with a gold background measuring 26 × 16.8 cm. Cardinal's clothing, the lion, the book and the church model identify the Doctor of the Church; the narrow panel probably came from the pilaster of a large Gothic altarpiece. Around 1450, Saint Peter Martyr healing a young man's leg, tempera and gold on wood measuring 53 × 33.3 cm, belongs to a series of eight stories. The young man had cut his leg out of remorse after hitting his mother; Antonio places the miracle in a carpenter's workshop, where the tools make the episode close and intelligible. The "Antonio Vivarini" selection notably compares Saint Jerome and Saint Peter Martyr healing a young man's leg. His reading favors movement.
In the gold of the altarpiece as in the carpenter's workshop, Vivarini makes the sacred immediately recognizable and humanly relatable.
