Claude Gellée, known as Claude Lorrain, was born in Lorraine around 1600 -1604 and died in Rome in 1682. Installed permanently in Italy, he made landscape a major genre by ordering ports, valleys, temples, trees and distances around a progressive light. Apollo appears in several faces: god of the arts surrounded by the Muses on the Helicon, shepherd guarding the herds of Admetus, rival of Marsyas or interlocutor of Mercury.
