Arthur Bowen Davies was born in Utica, New York, in 1862 and died in Florence in 1928. As a child, he drew assiduously and discovered a traveling landscape exhibition at the Hudson River School in 1877. After moving to Chicago with his family, he attended the Chicago Academy of Design from 1879 to 1882, then moved to New York in 1886 and studied at the Art Students League while working as an illustrator. His first major sale in 1893 launched an independent career. Davies painted silent landscapes populated by naked women, mythical animals and figures in procession. These images owe more to Corot, Puvis de Chavannes, with symbolism and dreamed Antiquity that to dominant urban realism. Yet he played a major role in opening American art to the avant-gardes. In 1908, he exhibited with The Eight alongside Robert Henri, John Sloan and Maurice Prendergast, although his classical poetry differed from their social realism. President of the Association of American Painters and Sculptors, Davies became one of the main organizers of the 1913 Armory Show. He selected and defended works by Matisse, Picasso, Brancusi and Duchamp, moving the New York public. An informed collector, he then supported many modern artists. His own painting briefly experimented with Cubist fragmentation, but often returned to the rhythms of the body and the ideal landscape. He thus embodies a modernity less visible by his style than by his cultural action. The "Arthur B. Davies" selection offers its own journey on this subject. His reading favors space.
Davies keeps two worlds in tension: his brush seeks a timeless Arcadia, while his smuggling gaze opens America to the most radical avant-gardes.
