1852 -1926 · Le Mans, Paris, history painting and national memory
Lionel-Noël Royer was born in 1852 in Château-du-Loir, in Sarthe. Volunteered before the age of eighteen during the Franco-Prussian War, he participated in the fighting of 1870. His talent as a designer was noticed by General de Charette, who helped him pursue artistic studies. At the Paris School of Fine Arts, Royer trained with Alexandre Cabanel and William Bouguereau. He exhibited at the Salon in 1874 and won the Prix de Rome in 1882. A recognized portraitist, he specialized especially in great history painting, which he constructed with theatrical readability: decor, costume, gesture and gaze converge towards the decisive moment. The Battle of Auvours transposes his memory of the recent war, while Vercingetorix throws his weapons at the feet of Julius Caesar, transforms Alésia's surrender into an icon of the national novel. Royer also produced a vast cycle devoted to Joan of Arc for the basilica of Domrémy and worked on the monumental decor. Esméralda shows a more literary and intimate vein. His art combines academic discipline, direct emotion and visual pedagogy at a time when historical images lastingly shape collective memory. The "Lionel Royer" selection notably compares Vercingétorix in front of Caesar and Battle of Auvours. His reading favors color.
Royer chooses the moment when the story becomes an image: a central gesture is enough to fix the event in the collective memory.
