Between 1883 and 1887, Georges Seurat assiduously observed Asnières and the neighboring banks of the Seine, northwest of Paris. The suburbs bring together popular leisure activities, boats, bridges, grassy terrain, gas holders and factory chimneys. A swim in Asnières, completed in 1884 when Seurat was only twenty-four years old, transformed workers and adolescents at rest into monumental figures.
