Benedito Calixto de Jesus was born in Itanhaém, on the coast of the state of Sao Paulo, in 1853 and died in 1927. Self-taught in his early days, he drew from childhood then worked in Santos, where he painted signs, walls and decorations to live. His talent was noticed in the homes of traders and during public commissions. After working at the Guarany theater, he received a scholarship which allowed him to study in Paris in 1883, notably at the Académie Julian. This practice did not replace observation: it allowed him to document coasts, ports, architecture and urban transformations before constructing vast compositions. Santos, Sao Vicente, Itanhaém and the Paulista coastline constitute the emotional and historical center of his work. Calixto paints seascapes, rural and urban landscapes, portraits, religious scenes and episodes in Brazilian history. For panoramas and reconstructions, he consults maps, texts, archives and old images. The large panels of the Bolsa Oficial do Café combine historical investigation, port views and civic narration.
