Florence, Faenza and narration of the first Renaissance around 1446 -1516
Biagio by Antonio Tucci was born in Florence around 1446 and died in 1516. He trained in the Florentine workshops of the second half of the 15th century, where altarpiece painting, domestic decoration and fresco circulated between several masters. His style dialogues with Verrocchio, Ghirlandaio, Botticelli and Filippino Lippi without being confused with them. Biagio works in Florence but maintains an important relationship with Faenza, where he receives religious commissions and directs a workshop activity. He also participated in the major construction site of the Sistine Chapel in Rome in the early 1480s. Narration is one of his major qualities. In The Story of Joseph or the Scenes of the story of the Argonauts, several episodes unfold in the same space. Buildings, squares, landscapes and groups distribute time without resorting to a separate image for each action. This process is suitable for cassone panels and domestic decorations, intended to be observed at length. Contemporary costumes bring ancient stories closer to the Florentine world. The Portrait of a Young Man shows another side of his art: tight framing, stable profile or gaze, clean clothing and sober background. Biagio thus unites visual chronicle and individual observation. The attributions have long been mixed with those of other Florentines, but its catalog is better today defined. A faithful reproduction must preserve the scale of the figures, the architectural details and the clarity of the colors. The "Antonio's Biagio" selection notably compares The Story of Joseph - Antonio's Biagio and Scenes from the History of the Argonauts - Antonio's Biagio. His reading favors composition.
Antonio's Biagio transforms the panel into a theater of time: the episodes follow one another in the same painted city, linked by architecture, gestures and color.
