Born in London into a family of artists, Briton Rivière trained with his father then studied at Oxford and the Royal Academy Schools. From the 1860s, he established himself as one of the great British animal painters, heir to Edwin Landseer. Elected Royal Academician in 1880, he combined careful observation of animals, literary and mythological subjects, humor and moral feeling.
