The Calouste Gulbenkian Museum preserves the exceptional private collection assembled by Calouste Sarkis Gulbenkian, from Antiquity to the beginning of the 20th century.
Calouste Sarkis Gulbenkian began to systematically acquire works at the end of the 19th century and continued his collection until 1953. His demand, summed up by the formula "only the best", brought together Egyptian, Greco-Roman art islamic, Armenian and Far Eastern, as well as painting, sculpture, books, French decorative arts and creations by René Lalique. The 6,440 objects were collected in Portugal in 1960. Specially designed by Ruy d'Athouguia, Pedro Cid and Alberto Pessoa, the museum opened in Lisbon on October 2, 1969. Rembrandt, Degas, Monet, Turner, Renoir and Manet gave the painting section a remarkable diversity of portraits, landscapes and scenes of life.
