1858 -1941 · neo-impressionism, anarchism and the world of work
Maximilien Luce paints the modernization of Paris from the ground: masons, longshoremen and pile mixers give the scaffolding, quays and metros a human scale and collective energy.
Maximilien Luce was born in Paris in 1858 in a modest environment. He first trained as a wood engraver, a profession which taught him the sharpness of structures and the diffusion of printed images. After his military service, he devoted himself more and more to painting and in the 1880s joined the neo-impressionist environment around Seurat, Signac and Pissarro. Luce adopted the division of the fingerboard, but without making it a rigid system. He used the division of the fingerboard, but without making it a rigid system. He used separate colors to increase light, then freely adapted the material to each subject. His anarchist convictions and his attention to the working world deeply guided his work. He collaborated with committed newspapers and was imprisoned in Mazas in 1894 during the repression of libertarian circles. His prison drawings demonstrate a direct look at bodies and institutions. Luce paints the streets, quays, factories and major works that transform Paris. Instead of abstractly celebrating progress, he shows those who make it possible. Curved masons, cement-bearing longshoremen, pile beaters and metro workers really occupy the composition. The beams, scaffolding and diagonals of the site form a precise geometry, but never separated from human effort. His stays in Charleroi from 1895 extended this research to Belgian blast furnaces, mines and industrial landscapes. Fire, smoke and night lights then intensify his palette. In the Seine and Passy construction sites, he combined social observation, rigorous construction and colorful vibration. Luce participated sustainably in the Salon des Indépendants and became its president before resigning in 1940 to protest against the exclusion of Jewish artists. He died in 1941. A faithful reproduction must preserve the diagonals of the scaffolding, the fragmented colors, the silhouettes at work and the atmospheric density of dust, smoke or urban light. He died in 1941. The selection "Construction sites and workers of Maximilien Luce" notably compares Les Maçons - Maximilien Luce and La fin de la day. Cement tank tops - Maximilien Luce. His reading favors light.
Luce does not paint the construction site as the spectacle of progress: it shows the bodies, the tools and the collective gestures without which no modernity is built.
