1684 -1721 · gallant party, theater and rococo poetry
Antoine Watteau transforms gardens, music, conversation and theater into gallant parties where the elegance of the fabrics remains crossed by waiting, desire and subtle melancholy.
Jean-Antoine Watteau was born in 1684 in Valenciennes, a town recently attached to the Kingdom of France. Son of a master roofer, he went to Paris around 1702 and first worked in workshops producing images at low prices. His time with Claude Gillot introduced him to the world of Italian theater, commedia dell'arte and its ambiguous characters. With Claude Audran III, decorator and guardian of the Luxembourg Palace, Watteau studied ornament, arabesques and especially the great cycle of Marie de Medici painted by Rubens. He also copied Venetian colorists and developed a light touch where figures seemed to be born from color. Approved at the Royal Academy in 1712, he put it back in 1717 his reception piece, The Pilgrimage to the Island of Cythera. The work does not correspond to any existing category; the Academy receives him as a painter of gallant parties. Couples, musicians and actors meet in imaginary parks, but their pleasure remains unstable. A look away, a statue of Venus, an uncertain departure or a distance between two figures is enough to transform sociability into meditation on desire. Pierrot, long called Gilles, isolates the actor in white in front of a more lively troupe and gives the character a monumental vulnerability. In The Sign of Gersaint, painted late for the boutique of the merchant Edme-François Gersaint, packaged paintings, customers and sellers compose a brilliant reflection on art as an object of desire and commerce. Watteau constantly drew, notably using the three pencil technique, and constructed his paintings from a vast repertoire of poses. Suffering from tuberculosis, he died in 1721 at the age of thirty-six. A faithful reproduction must preserve the vibration of the fabrics, the suspended gestures, the nuanced greens and pinks, the small touches of light and the psychological space between the figures. The selection "Masterpieces by Antoine Watteau" notably compares Le Pèlerinage à l'île de Cythère - Antoine Watteau and Pierrot - Antoine Watteau. His reading favors atmosphere.
Watteau's party is always about to end: it is this fragility that transforms social elegance into poetry of desire and time.
