1775 -1851 · British romanticism, light, sea and modernity
Joseph Mallord William Turner was born in London in 1775. His father, a barber, exhibited his drawings very early in his shop. Admitted to the Royal Academy schools at fourteen, Turner trained through perspective, topography, watercolor and master copying. From the 1790s, he traveled across Great Britain during the summer and transformed his notebooks into studio works during the winter. Elected academician, he aimed to give the landscape the dignity of history painting. Claude Lorrain inspired him, but Turner confronted the classical balance with the forces of his time: storm, fire, steam, industry, war and maritime traffic. His travels in France, Switzerland, Italy, Germany and above all in Venice, research on reflected light is enriched. In Approach to Venice where views of the Dogana, architecture and lagoon emerge from pale chords rather than being described stone by stone. The sea remains its great laboratory. Snowstorm at sea organizes water, sky and boat in a vortex where painted material transmits instability and danger. The Last Journey of the Bold combines naval memory and industrial modernity: a steam tugboat leads the old ship towards its destruction under a sunset. The Negrier's Last Voyage combines naval memory and industrial modernity: a steam tugboat leads the old ship towards its destruction under a sunset. The Negrier uses a violent color to denounce the abandonment of human beings thrown into the sea in order to claim insurance. Turner exhibits regularly at the Royal Academy, he opened his own gallery and divided criticism with his late paintings, sometimes considered visionary, sometimes incomprehensible. When he died in 1851, he bequeathed to the British nation an immense collection of paintings, watercolors, drawings and notebooks. A faithful reproduction must preserve the glazes, the luminous impastos, the dissolved edges, the dark accents, the circular movement and the tension between readable event and almost abstract atmosphere. The selection "Masterpieces by JMW Turner" notably compares Approach to Venice - JMW Turner and Snowstorm at Sea - JMW Turner. Its reading favors the material.
Turner does not just represent light: he shows how it erases, reveals and transforms the world in the same way as the wind or the sea.
