1827 -1906 · rural naturalism, peasantry and poetry of work
Jules Breton combines observation of rural life and poetic light to give gleaners, weeders, processions and returns from work a calm dignity, between realism and ideal.
Jules Adolphe Aimé Louis Breton was born in 1827 in Courrières, in Pas-de-Calais, into a wealthy rural family. Spotted very young for his talent, he trained in Belgium then in Paris, copied old masters and frequented realist painters. After his beginnings in history painting, he discovered his true subject by returning to Courrières: the work and rites of the peasant world. Breton observes gleaners, weeders, harvesters, pardons and processions, but he seeks neither the social satire of Daumier nor the harsh material of Courbet. His figures are often isolated or ordered in friezes, solidly drawn, lit by dawn or dusk. The gesture of work remains precise while the light gives it a meditative scope. In The Song of the Lark, painted in 1884, a young peasant girl stops in a field at daybreak, sickle in hand, to listen to an invisible bird. The scene unites fatigue, hope and natural beauty without leaving the reality on the ground. End of work, Le Rappel des gleaners and La Glaneuse lasse extend this attention to the thresholds of the day, when the body measures the time accomplished. Breton also paints collective festivals and ceremonies, particularly in Artois and Brittany, where costumes, gestures and landscape express community continuity. Very famous during his lifetime, medalist at the Salons and member of the Institute enjoyed particular success in the United States. Writer and poet, he also published memories and verses which illuminated his ideal of the countryside. He died in Paris in 1906. A faithful reproduction must preserve the grazing lights, the sharpness of the silhouettes, the warm earths, the simple fabrics, the details of the tools and the balance between concrete observation and poetic elevation. The "Masterpieces of Jules Breton" selection notably compares Le Chant de l'Alouette - Jules Breton and La gleaner lasse - Jules Breton. His reading favors composition.
Breton does not transform rural work into an anecdote: he chooses the moment when a gesture stops and the light reveals the silent dignity of the person.
