Baroque naturalism · 1571 -1610
Michelangelo Merisi was born in 1571 in Milan and grew up in Caravaggio, a Lombard city from which he takes his name. Trained with Simone Peterzano, he arrived in Rome in the early 1590s. His first paintings represented young men, musicians, fortune tellers with direct observation of faces, hands, fruits and fabrics. This material truth soon meets the great religious commission. In the paintings of the Contarelli chapel, dedicated to Saint Matthew, the characters wear contemporary clothing and occupy the same space as the viewer. A beam of light reveals the moment of call, doubt or martyrdom. Caravaggio often works without it visible preparatory drawing, sometimes incising the preparation to fix the position of a body. Its chiaroscuro not only constitutes a spectacular effect: it eliminates the secondary decor and gives the gesture a narrative value. There the artist's life is marked by trials and violence. After killing Ranuccio Tomassoni in 1606, he fled Rome and worked in Naples, Malta and Sicily. Late works become darker, larger and more stripped down. He died in 1610 while trying to return to Rome. A faithful reproduction must preserve the deep blacks without blocking them, the precise direction of the light, the density of the skin tones and the suspended moment which gives the painting its tension. The "Caravaggio" selection offers its own journey on this subject. Its reading favors the material.
In Caravaggio, light does not beautify the world: it chooses the moment when the body, the gaze and destiny become impossible to separate.
