Born in Copenhagen, Carl Heinrich Bloch studied with Wilhelm Marstrand at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. His stay in Italy from 1859 to 1866 nourished his genre scenes and strengthened his sense of color and narrative. After the success of Prometheus delivered, he received the commission for twenty-three scenes from the life of Christ for the chapel of Frederiksborg Castle, produced from 1865 to 1879, while continuing portraits, landscapes and historical subjects.
