Born in Nice in 1705 into a vast dynasty of painters, Charles-André, known as Carle van Loo, trained with his brother Jean-Baptiste then at the Royal Academy of Paris. Winner of the Grand Prix in 1724, he stayed in Rome, Naples and Turin before returning to Paris in 1734. Professor, director of the Academy then First painter to Louis XV, he deployed an international career between religious painting, mythology, portrait, allegory and genre scene.
