1721 -1797 · From Paris and Venice to the court of Ferdinand VI
Born in Paris in 1721 and died in Madrid in 1797, Charles-Joseph Flipart trained with his father Jean-Charles, painter and engraver. Around eighteen, he went to Venice, entered the studio of Jacopo Amigoni, rubbed shoulders with the Tiepolo community and worked for the engraver Joseph Wagner, notably reproducing compositions by Pietro Longhi. He probably arrived in Spain with Amigoni in 1748. Registered in 1750 among the artists of the Royal Hard Stone Laboratory, he became a painter and engraver for Ferdinand VI. The Portrait of a Woman shows the intimate part of his activity: face, fabric and attitude match cosmopolitan elegance. The Surrender of Seville to King Saint Ferdinand is the modello of a large altarpiece commissioned by Queen Bárbara of Braganza for the Salesas Reales. Keys, weapons, coats of arms and gestures give ceremonial readability to the event, while the luminous tones come from Amigoni and Corrado Giaquinto. Flipart also practices trompe l'oeil and especially engraving, a medium which teaches him to condense a composition before its broadcast. The "Charles Joseph Flipart" selection notably compares Portrait of a Woman and Surrender of Seville to King Saint Ferdinand. His reading favors details.
Flipart takes an image from Venice to Madrid: the engraver's drawing ensures clarity, the painter's color gives it its court shine.
