Born in Muri in Aargau in 1735, Caspar Wolf trained in Constance then stayed in Paris in the workshop of Philippe-Jacques de Loutherbourg, who probably introduced him to outdoor sketching. From 1773, the Bernese publisher Abraham Wagner commissioned a vast series of views of the Alps from him. Wolf accompanied explorations in high mountains, drew and painted on the motif, then resumed his studies in the workshop. Nearly two hundred large canvases provide a new, precise and spectacular vision of Swiss glaciers. The "Caspar Wolf" selection notably features Grindelwald's Lower Glacier.
