Puglia and Naples, 1605 -1651 · Bodily power and baroque naturalism
Cesare Fracanzano was born in Bisceglie, Puglia, in 1605 and died in Barletta in 1651. With his brother Francesco, he belonged to a southern generation marked by the naturalism of Ribera and the vigor of Neapolitan painting. His massive figures, his flesh modeled by shadow and his taste for popular bodies give an immediate presence to sacred, mythological or secular subjects. Two wrestlers, signed and painted around 1637, were commissioned for the History of Rome series intended for the Buen Retiro Palace in Madrid. This vast program combined the leisure activities of Antiquity - athletes, gladiators, races, animal fights and naumachia - with the recreational function of new palace of Philip IV. The composition could be based on the engravings of Girolamo Mercuriale's De arte gymnastica, published in 1573. However, Fracanzano does not paint a scholarly illustration: he brings the two men together, concentrates space and makes the fighting body the real subject. The "Cesare Fracanzano" selection notably compares two fighters. His reading favors the story.
In Fracanzano, Antiquity is not a setting: it takes on the weight, the heat and the effort of two bodies really struggling.
